TW Set #3 Mun prompt

Is there a character that you have always longed to write? A game you have wanted to join? A storyline you have wanted to play out? Articulate what it is that scares you, or keeps you from trying, and then talk about how you might begin to overcome what holds you back.

First off, this question is ten kinds of brilliant.

Second, my answer. I think writing an original character is always twenty times harder than things with an established fandom because you have all the information about the character in your head, but you can’t get every single little detail down, you can’t do it all in one go, and no one is going to love that character as much as you do.

Piggy backing off of that, what scares me is putting lots and lots of effort into my writing and not getting any response. I write primarily for academics, then for comics, and then in prose. The academics are the most important, and it’s probably where I excel the best. Prose is my worst and not getting responses to that usually indicates that I’m doing something wrong. I don’t like that feeling. Even “you suck” is preferably to nothing at all. I enjoy reading responses and that’s how it helps me improve. It doesn’t happen much in the world of comics, but in the world of academics a little suggestion goes a long way, as does in the world of prose.

There’s a lot of characters that live in my head. I try to give them equal attention and it doesn’t always happen. It’s something I feel bad about, and something that I don’t think I can remedy any time in the near future. My webcomic has about two years’ worth of material (an aprox. 295 page storyline coming up) , and for once we’re doing everything chronologically after that. It doesn’t let me use the vignettes I enjoy so much to flesh out other characters. There isn’t enough time to write every single story for all of the characters in my head. And it bothers me.

I’ve also noticed that I don’t go out of my way to interact with other people. I’m new to the prose writing community and it’s a community that absolutely judges you on your words. I’m used to it in academics, but not in prose. As I’m not overly confident in that department, I withdraw and simply sit, write what comes into my mind when I read prompts, and shuffle off to do more thesis work or talk with my artist about neo-classic architecture. I’m not quite sure how I can overcome this one either. While I’m used to silly crack role playing on IM, serious role playing is something I haven’t done much and I’m afraid people won’t like me. A silly fear, but I’m just trying to read other’s works and compliment them, hoping that karma works in my favour.

Long response is very long and possibly not in the same zip code of question!
