they were definitely a couple, most biographies skirt around it but they signed their diary together and although ludwig called Wagner my beloved friend he called Hornig the owner of his heart. Hornig was a dude though, he kept refusing all the gifts that Ludwig offered him. they made him testify at Ludwig's posthumous trial about all the things they did together, like midnight sleigh rides under the full moon (so romantic!) and then used them as proof Ludwig was mad. they couldn't prove he was mad when he was alive so they did it when he was dead.
Also Hornig was waiting on the shores of the lake to take him to Austria, his body was never autopsied, his clothes mysteriously vanished and witnesses swear they heard the report of gun fire.
the mental disorder is one of the great questionmarks, his brother, Otto was mad, absolutely, and he did step down from politics very early to promote art and castles and things, but i don't think he was mad. His diaries don't read like that, he couldn't act in parliament because his hoffmeister kept shooting him down, he had signed over the country to Bismarck and he had little else to do.
there is as much credence in the theory that his latent homosexuality drove him mad as that he was a werewolf, which is also a theory.
Whew, wuite interesting. I have to admit, I was a little (not overly) surprised to learn that he was having an interest in other men. But then again, I don´t know much about him to begin with. I´d love to read the manga! If it´s not too much of a bother, please upload them.
So, let me get this straight, though. You´re saying König Ludwig was making advances towards Hornig, but he turned him down (more or less)? Makes me strangely sad... And he wasn´t mad, so it was more some sort of... conspiracy?
oh no, hornig and ludwig were lovers (almost definitely) for about twenty years, it went on a very long time, and hornig was almost definitely seme but he wouldn't accept being lavished, he ended up as the king's secretary and staunchest defender but wouldnt' become a count or accept such and such an estate which just makes me love him more.
