pedantry or how SG shoots herself in the foot - constantly

Supanachuru is up
I have washed my hands of it - goodbye

but I'm working on the next one, and I have this good/bad habit, it works out good for you but gives me conniptions constantly, god, or the devil depending on who you ask, is in the details. Get the details right and the story slots into place
however where do you draw the line on getting the details right

the story is called The Rivers of Babylon, fine
it's based around psalm 137 - also fine
however it caused one small piece of consternation, the psalm talks about the Jewish people being held prisoner by the babylonians - nowhere in my catholic education do i remember this - at all, ever
i also know that Abraham had some sort of pow-wow with Nimrod of Babylon but no slavery to my knowledge - i could be wrong
but i do know some of primary gods of babylon were mammon and Sin so can extrapolate easily that these things were altered to fit the jewish mythology as an ememy thing
fine
but babylon wasn't geographically really in a position to invade jerusalem, it's south of Baghdad in the river delta of Euphrates and Tigris
in fact I'm wondering if it's not a misnamed city, byzantium probably raided jerusalem all the time (god knows the crusades are example enough of that)
but here's the rub - none of this matters for the story
but I have got caught on it, like a fox on a fence
and now i need to get an atlas and mark out the complete routes of the euphrates and tigris and wonder whether or not it matters if i nick the mythical river Alph and would anyone a) know b) care
