Over the Rainbow - Judy Garland
From the film The Wizard of Oz

The piece from NPR first aired sometime in 2001 or 2002. I remember because I was sitting at my soul-sucking data entry temp job, listening to "Performance Today" and this piece came on. Suddenly, I was transported out of my hellish data entry existence, shot right into Oz, and it was mesmerizing.

Thanks so much for posting this - it brought me back to the first time I heard it, and I really enjoyed listening to it again. :)

You're welcome! The link was posted in the NPR review of the new Ultimate Collector's Edition release of Wizard, which just got released. Which looks like something I'm gonna have to buy. :)

I enjoyed that interview, and your thoughts on the song - so simple and so powerful. It makes me think of another classic yearning song, Memory from Cats. The same little `circles' in the melody, like a wandering cat, the reaching for something better, and the final climactic, heartwrenching `touch me!', ending on a note of hope. No wonder it wallops you emotionally.
