Warning (of sorts): Super-old story that I didn't fact check because I wanted to get it up for Valentine's Day.
Here’s to Us
They had seen all the decorations around the city, heard all the love songs on the radio, the flowers and candy on sale in the stores. That wasn’t why tonight was happening. Lois and Clark agreed to babysit, Victor was covering for Oliver at Queen Industries, while Dinah and Bart handled patrolling. Therefore, for one night, they could turn off their cell phone and have one night without any distraction. However, that also wasn’t why tonight was happening.
Neither of them had been overly fond of this particular holiday, because with them, there was no need to set aside a day to confirm their love for each other. They never needed that, especially considering they didn’t remember their wedding day. All they needed was to look into each other’s eyes and they’d know, although a ripped marriage certificate helped.
They never bothered getting a new one, preferring the fragmented version of the original because it was like them. The broken nature they had seen in each other at one point, only to find peace and harmony as they spent more time together.
But lately, that time had been limited. For Oliver, it had reduced to a simple Hello in the morning and the feeling of her cuddling his body in bed once he returned from patrolling. Meanwhile, motherhood and hero recruitment kept Chloe from storming the journalism lines as she used to, but Chloe didn’t mind, as her boss at the Register understood and she never missed a deadline. However, it didn’t leave much time to spend with her husband, so when Lois insisted on helping out, Chloe jumped at the chance.
Only in return, Oliver insisted on spoiling her, allowing for her to feel pampered tonight, starting with a home-cooked meal. Not that she complained, considering his cooking skills were significantly better than hers.
As Chloe set up the movie, Oliver put the plates down on the coffee table. Whatever he cooked smelled amazing, but before she could dig in, he distracted her with a glass of wine. She took the glass, recognizing that he moved his glass towards her.
“To whatever it is we’re doing,” Oliver said with a smile, “because it led to the best decision I don’t remember making.”
Chloe chinked her glass to his. “Happy Anniversary," she said.
Sure, it wasn’t the most accurate anniversary now that they were married, but the word felt appropriate.
Of course that didn’t stop her husband from calling her on it. “Is it now? Are you sure it’s not some other vague category?”
From there, they traded some words back-and-forth, most in a joking, loving manner. However, it wasn't long before their glasses had found their way to the table, next to the food, as they had found a different way to celebrate their anniversary.
~End~
Sera’s Scribbles: So I wrote this three years ago for Valentine’s Day and kept forgetting to post it each year. I thought about elaborating, or re-writing, but minus a few tweaks, it turned out that I didn't completely hate what I already had. If memory serves, the airdates aren’t super conclusive on whether their ‘anniversary’ is on or around Valentine’s Day… but for this story, I’m pretending it is on Valentine’s Day.
On another note, I'm pretty sure this could be the closest I've ever come to writing fluff.
