Why this must be read/seen: I admit, I'd been quietly picturing for years just how epic this pairing would be, so st_aurafina gets cool points in my book simply for making it be. But the roots of this fic run much deeper than that - this is a beautifully realised character study of both men, and what they've lost, and what they might find, both in each other, and beyond. Though it's a short piece, I love the scope of it - the sensations of loss and of possibility are palpable, and both Midnighter and Logan are brutal, business-like, rough, tender, and heroic exactly where they ought to be. I love the ending in particular, made all the more poignant because we know from canon where each man will go from that point - this is a fic that works just as well within its silences, what isn't said, as it does with its stark and beautiful prose.

What they do isn't very nice, but it eats up the time between assignments. The gaps left by the constant skillset augmentations and memory implants make conversation disjointed. When the ordnance is clean and stowed and the dead-drops are ready, the silences between their brief exchanges become longer. Far better for Logan to slide one hand along the other man's jaw line, and pull him down to meet his own mouth. They trail clothes bloodied by the work all the way to the shower in the cheap hotel, and fuck languidly under tepid rusty water. In the morning, there's a new contact, a new target and a new assignment. Weapon X and Weapon M. Nothing changes. Why would it?
