I'm trying to stretch as a writer so I've been toying around with a romance novel, not because I want to be a Romance Writer but because there are some techniques those writers use that I want to become profficient with in my own work. I love to read a good love story, I want to strengthen my own writing of them.
So, I'm reading the Romance Writer's Handbook by Rebecca Vinyard with chapters by other writers and in the chapter on love scenes she mentions a technique that I've never heard before. She approaches those scenes with a "theme" and then writes down a list of words to use that underscore that theme: poetry, water, fire, music, etc.
Has anyone else ever used a technique like this? Is it handy or is it mechanical?
