So I'm sitting here trying to sign on to my school website to do homework, and it won't let me. So I decided to start on a little project I've wanted to do for some time now. This is part-essay and part musing on my part. It may or may not fit in with your head-canon or even historical knowledge. On both parts I am open to increasing my own horizons. So feel free to give me your own input, but not criticism just because you don't like the pairing, or agree on how I interpret and characters. I'll start with Russia.

I'd also like to point out that anyone who reads my fics will have a fuller idea of my boundaries on these two. It's not always so cut and dry, and as far as Russia goes there's a difference between being kinky and being abusive!

Russia

Honestly, I was overjoyed when I saw this! Now, while I was amused by the apparent satire of the profile, it really made me happy. We all know that Russia is not always gentle. Bloody Sunday, as a child shown fighting the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and fighting Lithuania before the Commonwealth even. There's also the strip where he ends up chasing Estonia with his pipe here, and when he's surprised by something unpleasant (cold water). However, he wants to be gentle. It's in his nature to be gentle. Keep in mind this is mostly my opinion yes, but I do not see Russia as openly sadistic. At. All.

There's nothing I hate more than rape-truck Russia. To be honest, I think it's an insult to his character. Rape, and giving others pain for the sake of his own pleasure sickens me, because he has never shown this kind of behavior in canon. Enjoying the act of abuse to the point of breaking bones and bloody messes makes me ill (not from the acts but from Russia enjoying doing so). If Russia enjoyed bloodshed so much, why is he crying when he's forced to do so? He loves to tease, to be a bully and pick on other nations. He wants to see others "crying and begging for mercy", I think he said? This doesn't mean to me that he wants to brutally hurt them. He wants to see Lithuania "come to him crying--for help". I think that Russia secretly wants to be the "hero", and that's why he dislikes America so much. America is loud and pushy, and that clashes with Russia's more quiet approach. Even if Russia is the cause of the strife, he wants to be the one to fix it as well. I'll have more on this later in the description of his relationship with Lithuania in history.

Russia isn't malicious, just "extremely scary". He's big, powerful, a bully, and potentially violent. Who wouldn't be scared? In his original profile it states that he holds a child-like cruelty. Children pull a cat's tail and then seem honestly surprised when they get scratched. I don't think that Ivan always knows where the line between teasing and offending is. Don't get me wrong, he's the king of snide comments with a smile. That being said I think that Russia is a very guarded man/nation. He us used to insults and disdain from other nations, and so he hides all of his bitterness and hurt, yes hurt, from everyone with a smile. He gets angry when he's hurt/insulted too. Russia's grudge for Poland can be partially explained in Hetare Official Chapter 4 when it states that, "Russia actually had traumatic memories of Poland and letters before. In one of their wars, he grew to distrust his allies thanks to Poland's fake letters and caused massive unrest in the ranks, at which point Poland swooped in and took Moscow.". Also that "He did get a very thorough revenge afterwards, though.". Russia can nurse a grudge a looooong way.

One thing that must be mentioned is Russia being "naive" as well. A lot of his dreams and statements are things he's very sure of. Wanting to live in a warm place with sunflowers, wanting the world to "become one" with him. I think that he tells himself these things so much that he believes them. He's obviously not naive about everything. One or two people (not sure if they were the same person because one was an anon) mentioned to me something. They think that Russia is... a virgin. In all his existence, he's asexual. Now... I find this hard to believe for about any nation. But both people quoted the SAME line to me, and that was this. Sorry, but I believe that's reading way too much into that line. He could mean he doesn't feel that way towards France? Or maybe he doesn't want someone grabbing his moobs chest? His smile there to me also shows he was embarrassed and hiding it.

Russia's history is bathed in violence and hardships. From the Golden Horde to even fighting with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Russia lost the most lives in both WWI (even though they pulled out early) and WWII. Russia believes in what he is doing with a zealous kind of faith. What he does he does because he honestly thinks it's best. He listens to his bosses and he does what they say. Bloody Sunday is the best example, but then what of the murder of the royal family for the rise of the Soviet? As the people's minds changed, so did his own. He believed that Communism would be better for him and his "children" as he calls his people. Almost everything he does is for the good of his children. Mother Russia indeed.

Russia is also a bit fragile emotionally. In this strip he admits that sometimes his heart falls out. I think that this is almost a metaphor for when he is forced to deal with something emotionally painful, he "looses his heart" or shuts off his emotions.

His name
Ivan Braginski. Some spell his last name differently, saying it's not Russian. It may be a different Russian surname, but it's not an impossible name, however it IS a more Polish ending. As this is canon and as Himaruya wrote it, this is what I used to use. Now I use Braginsky, which is the more Russian way of ending it.

Wow, um, that got long. I think I touched on all of the major subjects! If I missed anything I'll fix it.

Lithuania

Once again from the new little profiles, this. Honestly I was a little surprised to find him even more serious than Germany! Though it's cute and funny that he doesn't get jokes. I can't decide if this would mean he wouldn't understand if you were insulting him or he'd take a joke too seriously! Ah, anyway. As it says, Lithuania has a strong body! He has withstood over a thousand years of hardship. The Grand Dutchy of Lithuania grew and grew all on it's own, and had a unique habit of letting their conquered lands govern themselves. However this didn't lead to being able to protect themselves very well, and so his Empire began to shrink.

Lithuania is a strong and stubborn person. He is honest to a fault, as was linked above to the strip with him telling Russia exactly what he thought about his old clothing. He's very brave, as his brothers don't know how he talks to Russia so normally. Liet is kind and caring for others, like how he warned Poland about Russia invading even though things were very tense between them at that time historically. (I could get in to canon clashing with history here but I won't, except to say anyone who says Poland and Lithuania were and are still BFF all the time is wrong.) He loves to cook and loves nature. His first official profile says "Is particular about taste, and is known to use many flavours of ketchup and mayonnaise in a day." His weakness is his stomach. He gets stomach aches from worrying. He has almost infinite patience. While Outsourced and living with America, he's asked by England "How are you able to adjust so well to this?", Liet replies, "If you’ve lived with Poland for all hours of the day and then got invaded by Russia, you would know."

Now, my assumption on Liet being stubborn (or at least strong-willed) comes mostly from his dealings with Poland in canon. He tries his hardest to be patient with him, and help him, but he also puts his foot down... or tries. In history I think his rebellions against Russia speak for themselves. Twice before 1812 (had Polish help), defying the Press Ban, assisting Napoleon (and France) with the war against Russia in 1812 in an attempt to be free from the Tsardom, a small rebellion after 1905 (Bloody Sunday), and well, when they became free in 1918. Oooh, don't get me into the Forest Brothers (Soviet Era) but I love them. Also, his war against Poland in the 1920's when Poland invaded and took over the Vilnius (Liet's poor vitals!) region. Even with a friend, in canon, this would mean he fought with him strongly. (During this war he signed a peace treaty and accepted help from Russia but I will get to more on that later.)

Poland is called a phoenix, but how can Lithuania not be one as well? He was reduced to Russia's assistant in the Tsardom and Soviet. This is why we see him most often with Russia, as in the Bloody Sunday and going to Germany strips. He is even packing for Russia in that last one. And bringing him tea in another strip. He reads Russia pretty well because of this. Lithuania is a strong nation/person with high endurance mentally, physically, and I believe emotionally as well. First profile says "A good-natured person who likes to take care of people, and even though he has the Baltic attribute of being introverted, is the type who will take one into his heart when he gets used to that person." Now, I do believe that this includes Russia as well. Both Russia and Poland have caused him pain, but he handles them both tactfully.

His name
Toris Laurinaitis. Oh man, this. Now, I have used 'Lorinaitis' a few times by mistake, but his last name isn't what I see changed. Tolys, Tauris, Taurys... I've seen many changes to his name. My question is: Why? So his name isn't an official name in Lithuanian so I have heard. But the letters are accepted. (Unlike Felix, where in Polish they don't have an x so I have heard, so fandom dubbed it Feliks which I use). First of all his name would be near a thousand years old. Second of all, that's his canon given name and I see nothing wrong with it. Plus I like and have gotten so used to Toris I can't use anything else. Fandom, please stop messing with his name. :(

As a Couple

That I know of, Lithuania and Russia have the most official relationship outside of Germany and Italy. (Clarification, this is a joke. If it's not true it's like Sweden saying Finland is his wife, and Finland denying it. I just choose to take it as canon.) Now, pure canon suggests that Liet might have been with Poland during the Commonwealth (America calls Poland Liet's 'old partner' but this could be taken differently, though it was a union). But as far as the Tsardom is concerned, it seems Russia and Lithuania were a couple.

The first hurdle that I want to address is Lithuania's scars. While it is hinted that Russia caused them, I don't think he is the source of all of them. Fandom has pretty much accepted as canon that Lithuania was whipped at some time by Russia. While I can see by the scars, they could be interpreted as that, alright. I understand that this is seen as unhealthy and abusive, and I will not say that this pairing is always healthy. It is complex and often times dark. I do not believe that Russia gets off on or enjoys hurting Lithuania though. I believe that if this event took place (a whipping) it was done in response to one of Lithuania's rebellions, and possibly out of fear of losing him and wanting to keep him by force. Honestly seeing Russia being abusive for his own pleasure sickens me. But that's my opinion.

The next hurdle is Lithuania's crush on Belarus. I can't find the strip with their "date" (which was not a date) in which Belarus breaks his fingers, but it's there. Also when Russia is getting ready to go to Germany Liet mentions he would like to go on a date with her. When this happens Russia says he has two tickets to Siberia. Now, did he mean that if Lithuania tried to be with his sister, he will send them both there? Because that's how it sounded. And honestly I see this as Russia's jealousy. After all, his sister hardly needs protecting and Russia knows that very well. So I see it as trying to keep Lithuania away from her, because Liet wouldn't want her harmed. Alright, so that being said. I think that Lithuania has a crush on Belarus. I think that he may not have had much choice in his relationship with Russia (I will remind you I'm not talking about rape. Maybe dubious consent, but not rape). This being said Lithuania would be bisexual. In direct canon.

Lithuania is trusted to be the seemingly personal assistant to Russia. Given his personality I think that it says a lot that he would learn to understand Russia's flaws and also his merits. When Poland attacked and took over the Vilnius region after WWI, Lithuania signed a peace treaty with Russia that allowed their soldiers permission to move within Lithuanian territory. Lithuania couldn't afford to fight very well themselves, but the Russians could. Liet was officially neutral during this time. However they arrested Polish soldiers and not the Russians, because of the treaty. It should be mentioned that in the start of this, Lithuania was pushing the Soviets out as well, until Poland's "betrayal". I don't ignore history, don't worry. Poland accused Lithuania of allying with the Soviets. The Russians had to retreat however, and the Vilnius region was annexed in 1922. ALL relations between Poland and Lithuania were cut off until the Polish Ultimatum of 1938.

After the Soviet-Lithuanian Peace Treaty was ratified in 1920, the Russian SFSR recognized Lithuanian claims to the Vilnius Region and continued to support them. In its responses to the 1938 ultimatum, the Soviet Union expressed concerns over Lithuania's independence and threatened to abrogate the Soviet-Polish Non-Aggression Pact of 1932. Obviously in canon I see this as Russia being concerned over Lithuania. And considering he went all the way to America to make sure he took good care of his ex, it makes perfect sense and seems in character.

With the emergence of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (in the canon strips this is where Russia went to see Germany which well, isn't fully right with history but) Russia made sure to include the majority of Lithuania and the entire Vilnius region--which would be given back to Lithuania. And that's just what they did. And then Russia invaded and took over Lithuania. Nobody is surprised here. So now his help came with a price, where it didn't before. But Russia saw a chance to bring Liet back into his house (along with the other Baltics and others) and so he did. He wanted a big happy house again and instead got the Soviet Union.

Of course way before this in the Commonwealth era they fought with Russia as well. But many other countries fought each other, and look at them now. Japan and China are civil. France and Germany. Heck, Germany and everyone. So when people try and point out wars as why Russia and Lithuania don't work hey, plenty of other reasonable pairings could be brought down by that. I don't judge pairings with history. They're nations. Wars are led by leaders and well, what choice do they always have? Germany didn't want to go to war. I don't think Russia ever wanted to hurt Lithuania. He may have gotten angry and wanted a bit of retribution sure. But I already gave my opinions on that kind of thing.

Ah, that little scene with Lithuania waking up from sleeping on Russia's couch, and he finds Russia there being leaned on... I love that strip. Russia would have had to sit down next to Liet after Liet already fell asleep. I think it's cute. Like he wanted someone to be close to for a while. Then he blushes and tells Lithuania about his dream, which I don't think he would have done if he wasn't comfortable with him. In one of the drama CD's, the one with the "Sentai" colors when Russia says he's pink (lol), he says how much he loves Lithuania's cooking. And he also winks at him. But that's just more cute things that come to mind.

As far as current events go, Lithuania has the best relations with Russia out of the three Baltics. He has no law against ethnic Russians spelling their names the way they want. Meanwhile Estonia and Latvia do. Things have been tense of course, like all the ex-Soviet bloc, but it still stands that Russians said they wished the other Baltics would behave like Lithuania. There was this funny article I read about Lithuania getting rid of this Russian news channel, and all the Russians were complaining that it was because of the Polish minority living in Lithuania. So Russia complaining over something Lithuania did and blaming Poland. Which seemed in character too.
