So, I picked up a compilation of a few Spider-man comics tonight: The Death of Gwen Stacy. I've talked about it for years as though I knew it, and I did. I knew the story, how it happens, everything. But I'd never actually read the comic. I owned all the issues leading up to that momentous event, but had never ACTUALLY read issue #121...until tonight.
I cried.
Amazing writers. It was so sad. What does it say about me that these are the stories I cherish the most: the ones where the hero's beloved is killed at the hands of his mortal foe? Cloud-Aeris-Sephiroth, Parker-Gwen-Norman, Turin-Niniel-Glaurung (sort of). Is it just that they're more interesting? Or some comment on myself?
