Core One: Why Should I Study This Community?

As many people as there are who know how to play chess, one would think that there would be more of a draw to a chess club than what there is, especially for being on a college campus. In fact, many students have no idea that there is a chess club in the area let alone on campus. What makes this community such an undergound or overlooked group?

There's always going to be the double-edged sword of reputation. On one side, there is the stigma remaining from high school. Something about pocket protectors and calculating pi means you play chess automaticly whereas if one has a social life or anything resembling it, one might be interested, but one certainly does not play with any vigor or finesse. On the other is the Grand Masters, or International Masters, who seem to do nothing but study and live chess. Most people I speak to know what Deep Blue is, a computer built for the sole purpose of analyzing chess but have absolutely no clue as to who acutally went up against this computer.

This group deserves a closer look into the culture suurrounding chess because there is a passion there that can be found in any pro-sport or
