We woke up way too early this morning. (Before 8am, I think.) I don't know why.
We had a slow, decadent start to the day: coffee and cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, internet surfing. Eventually we got motivated to get moving, so we sun-screened up and headed out to the zoo.
Crystal and Siku
The zoo was *hot* and ***crowded***. We had to park in the very back lot and hike to the gate. It was worth enduring the heat and crowds though, because I got to see Siku, the new polar bear cub! He was playing, wrestling his mom, pouncing on the window looking down into the seal tank, swimming, chasing a ball. He was painfully adorable. We also saw the new children's center, where I was mesmerized by the clear tubes wrapping around the room making a highway of sorts for the thousands of ants moving leaves many times their size into their ant hills. We also saw the swank new elephant exhibit where the elephants have to work a few enriching trunk obstacles to find their treats. It was quite comical to see trunks coming through holes in the wall, groping for branches. We saw the giraffes too, including the baby, and a whole bunch of other impressive and adorable animals. The Toledo Zoo is top notch, and we make very good use of our membership. Our main purpose for going today was really just to have lunch. I love the hotdogs there, and we always split a super chocolatey pudding. Yum! And did I mention, BABY POLAR BEAR?!! :D
After the zoo, we did a little shopping for ceiling fans, but decided we had to pay the landscaping bill first, so we moved on to flower shopping. I got some more seeds and a few ready-to-plant flowers, not a ton of stuff, but some things to plant this weekend. I'm quite excited about that, even though it means more sweaty yardwork. Bleh.
Totally melting and exhausted, we came back home and sat on the porch swing, sipped iced tea and watched the sprinklers water our new lawn. I spent the rest of the evening studying for my amateur radio technician test which is tomorrow morning. I took 10 practice tests of 35 questions each, and scored 100% on six of them, 97% on four (34/35). I feel ready. I'm pretty confident I'll pass, but I -really- hope I'll ace it. :)
The last bit of excitement for the day came when I fed the bunny. While walking back to the kitchen, I noticed the bag of greens had a strange pink tint to it, and when I checked the fridge to see where it might have come from, I found the double-bagged chicken leaking blood all over the bottom of the fridge! ARGH!!! I ran to get the greens back from Mia, but she'd already wolfed half of them down. I have to figure they were all right. She hides when we cook meat, so I can't imagine she'd have eaten them if they smelled of blood. I hope not anyhow. *sigh* And WHY are produce crisper drawers always on the very bottom of the fridge??? ARGH! We threw out all of our produce :( and spent a while washing the fridge down. Dammit. As long as my bunny doesn't get sick from it, the rest of the mess doesn't matter.
Now I need to go to bed. I have to be up just after 7am to get ready for my test. Buh.
But first. Have an elephant. Our camera battery died, so this is the only elephant pic we got. Craig took a few with his phone, but he hasn't downloaded those yet.
