the good old days before google were dark and involved horses

I am celebrating the fact that this time next week, this testing cycle is over and I will have glorious not terrifyingly days at work in which I will not be in a constant state of panic. Which also coincides with payday, so really, what can be better than that? A pony, that's what. Though not by much.So I was reading about how the internet now ( Read more... )

You forgot the one thing that has haunted fandom and frustrated readers since the very beginning: the abandoned WIP.

OMG. RIP the poor abandoned WIP. There are still fics from six fandoms ago that I think about and wish that damn bitch would finish.

I think we all can agree with that sentiment. If it's going to be a WIP why can't it be a bad one? I just think that would make it easier to let go of.

*sad* No, I've been bitter over badfic WIPs. Maybe more so. The sheer audacity makes me wonder how much farther they'd go. I will never know.

Exactly. It doesn't even have to be good. You just feel you need to follow the puppy to its logical (or illogical) conclusion.

There should be a site where all the abandoned WIP's can go to die. And willing writers can step in and have a go at finishing them. I mean, you invest so much time in reading them, that it would be nice to get some closure. :D

I have more than one WiP that I started my own additions to - simply for my own gratification. But the downside is that you can also end up with 8 million mediocre conclusions - re: Severitus Challenge.

Now what's really fun, is when an author gets so sick of getting poked about a WIP from a fandom she left months or years ago, that when she does finally finish it, she makes a special point of only ever posting it to her flocked fic journal.

Psh, that still happens. In 2008 I finally finished the six-chapter Minesweeper fic I started in 2002. It got me reviews like:

"I think it's awesome that you're continuing this after three years. It's still one of the most creative fics I've ever read. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next chapter in a couple of years."

This is one of the problems about getting into an older fandom. I've started to read things and realized that the last update was ten years ago and have to accept that it will probably never be completed. ;_;
