They’re seventeen when the SM representative approaches him.
Kyungsoo is texting Hyunsik, having just won another singing competition, when the smartly-dressed woman offers him the business card, with a simple, “Give us a call.”
**
Being a trainee is hard, Kyungsoo realises over the next year and a half.
Hyunsik is put in a group with some of the other trainees, and, shortly afterwards, so is Kyungsoo. Eunkwang and Changsub, and the rest of Hyunsik’s groupmates are all lively and friendly, barely blinking an eye when Hyunsik introduces Kyungsoo as his boyfriend.
Kyungsoo’s groupmates are quiet and reserved, constantly aware of management’s watchful eye. Kyungsoo goes home every day feeling frustrated, tired of the way the trainees all split into smaller groups, still wary of each other.
**
Management call a meeting on the October before Kyungsoo’s nineteenth birthday.
“This is the final lineup for EXO,” one of the executives announces.
“Where are Jino and Moonkyu?” Jongin asks, looking confused.
The executive shoots him a sharp look, and simply says, “Preparations start in a week.”
**
Kyungsoo visits Hyunsik at his dorms after the first recording session. Hyunsik’s smile is warm and the weight of his hand in Kyungsoo’s is familiar as he leads Kyungsoo up the stairs.
“We’re moving into dorms next week,” Kyungsoo says quietly, perched against the kitchen counter as Hyunsik makes them both sandwiches.
Hyunsik looks up from the tuna, and says, “Oh.”
Hyunsik goes home with him that night.
**
They’re eighteen when they break up.
Hyunsik kisses him on his doorstep, whispers, “I love you,” against his lips and slowly pulls away. Kyungsoo blinks back tears and nods, because Hyunsik will know what he means, Hyunsik always knows what he means.
Hyunsik smiles, squeezes his hands, and walks away.
**
They’re nineteen, and Kyungsoo has just debuted, and Hyunsik is right there, smiling warmly at him, like they’re still fourteen and back in the music rooms, all shy touches and soft, wet kisses.
“Hi,” he says. Behind him, Minhyuk and Ilhoon are engaged in some sort of rap battle, words drowned out by Eunkwang and Sungjae’s laughter.
“Hi,” Kyungsoo replies, laughing.
Later, when he can’t stop smiling, Jongin asks, “What’s wrong with you?”
Kyungsoo looks out on to the stage, where BTOB are currently performing. Hyunsik is smiling, tall and handsome, completely at home next to his groupmates. The girls were right, Kyungsoo thinks, remembering the whispered conversations from when he was thirteen.
“Nothing,” he replies, taking Jongin’s hand and squeezing it, “I’m just happy.”
