"I'm so sorry! Are you okay...?"
What was the source of his petrified-like state? Was it the impact from being accidentally smacked in the face with a volleyball? Or was it the fact that a girl named Jei's sincerely concerned face was suddenly just inches away from his own?
But damn, that was one tough serve.
With his hand still rubbing his head, Minjun finally nods. "Yeah, I'm alright now. I think."
He couldn't help but notice the sudden change of expression on Jei's face. "If you're hurting, just say so. You're always like this, aren't you. Stop acting like that." Minjun blinked with surprise, then a thought triggered in his head.
Just two weeks ago, he was partnered with Jei for a AP Biology presentation to construct a song about the cardiac system. The assignment was meant to be fun and easy-going, but as soon as he moved to Jei's area, she warned him: "Let me say this up front. I've heard about you and don't even think that you can win me over like those dense girls over there." Despite this statement shocking Minjun, he couldn't help but turn his head; sure enough, a few girls from the other side of the room flashed him flirtatious smiles. He smiled back, but when he turned back to Jei, she was far from amused.
Ever since then, Minjun didn't expect himself to be so interested in someone who claimed she would never be interested in him.
Surely, he hadn't expect such a statement coming from a girl like Jei. The vivacious, adorable Jei that he's become acquainted with since last year. For a while, he even believed she was two-faced, but soon realized she only treated him in this way.

Minjun was dumbfounded. Still grasping the situation, he cautiously asked, "Was that what I think it was?" (A confession?) "I'm sorry. I didn't know you felt that way." (About everything about him that she had bottled up inside.)
Jei smacked her forehead. "I'm such an idiot...Why are you smiling?" Minjun's smile immediately faded away. He hadn't realized he was smiling. Awkward. "I guess you really do feel okay now?" It took him a moment to understand she meant his head. Oh yeah. Right. "Well, there might be a bump. I mean, that was one terrible serve to have been able to hit me all the way out here," he teased.
It was in his nature to throw in funny lines to move the conversation away from tense atmospheres. Chalk it up to his natural social abilities. However, he was completely unprepared for what came next: her laughter. Her true smile.
In that moment, Minjun could have sworn Jei was an angel on earth, then embarrassingly scratched his head at the cheesy thought. "Jei! Are you going to continue playing or what?" Jei turned her back to her friends. "Yeah, I'm coming!" She faced Minjun with a I'm-not-sure-what-to-do-now expression, then her eyes lit up. "I'm no nurse, but --" And then she leaned closer, stepped on her tiptoes, and kissed the area above his left eyebrow. It didn't hurt one bit.
'Ba-Bump bump bump bump, the heart goes wild.' Just like that lyric in their biology song.
"I'm sorry, again! For everything." She immediately ran back to her friends with the volleyball back in her hands. Minjun was dazed as he turned to walk towards the infirmary to check on his nose. What just happened? For everything? Like, for causing that much confusion to him? Does his head hurt more all of a sudden, or was he over-thinking? However, he was able to come to the conclusion that Jei was a surprising wind that came blowing into his life in a complicated, but interesting way. And that it was something worth expecting.
