"You know," Chanyeol says when he slides up next to him in the hot food line in the hospital cafeteria two days later, "remember those heart tickly things I told you about?"

"Yeah?" Yifan turns around to see Chanyeol's smile a little too close to him, and his heart actually leaps a little to signal the start of that nice hum.

"I think I'm beginning to notice a pattern."

Yifan swallows and focuses on watching the server ladle soup into bowls. "Yeah?"

"I think..... it only really happens when I'm around you."

Yifan chokes on air, because like he hadn't totally noticed the same thing, and like it wasn't making him totally confused.

"I'm not - you know - I don't mean this as a pickup line or anything," Chanyeol scrunches his face up in a rather adorable manner, "though I mean, haha. You're attractive. But like, just an observation. Is this ....normal? Still?"

Yifan cannot juggle it being his turn to order, Chanyeol's completely sudden surprise attack compliment, and the fact that Chanyeol was totally feeling the same freaky thing he did. He gulps and breathes twice, slowly, before ordering.

Chanyeol follows him to a table and they set their trays down, Chanyeol sliding into the seat opposite his. "Wait, you don't mind me sitting here, right?"

"No," Yifan says hastily - a little too hastily - and bites his tongue. "Uh, about your problem - I - don't know. I know - some other people....... with the same problem, and they, uh, don't seem to have any problems. Physically, I mean."

"Oh, good," Chanyeol grins, "also, uh, it's been turning into kind of a warmth now. Is this like, heartburn? Should I be worried? It's kind of comfortable, though......"

Yifan laughs at this, taking a bite of his chicken. "Don't worry, heartburn doesn't feel like your heart is on fire. At least, not literally. Tell me when it starts getting painful."

"Oh, no, it's really comfortable and nice, like it makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Like I swallowed a snuggie and hot chocolate at the same time. It makes me want to be around you all the time, to be honest."

Chanyeol says it so matter-of-factly that Yifan is stunned into silence, because Chanyeol had just about described exactly what that hum/warmth felt like. Like Chanyeol had taken the words right out of his mouth. The worst part was, he couldn't find anything in himself to feel weirded out about this, even though Chanyeol was barely a friend - they'd only met a week ago, for fuck's sake. Chanyeol's wiggled past those defences he'd put up against most strangers so effortlessly, but nothing feels out of place at all, like his heart was reassuring him that this was right.

"Oh," he offers lamely, which has to be socially unacceptable, so he musters up the most genuine smile he can at Chanyeol. Chanyeol returns it with a blinding grin.
