Joonmyun first met Yixing about two or three years into training.

Management had thrust them together because, even at that point, Joonmyun was already one of more senior trainees. They had said that him and Yixing could learn a lot from each other. Joonmyun, ever complacent and obedient, accepted.

It wasn't fair, though, Joonmyun muses, swimming in memories of earlier years, because in the end, he was the one who came away learning more than he had ever learned in those first couple years as a trainee; and all he had had to offer Yixing in return was tutelage in Korean.

In his eagerness to impress, Joonmyun had showcased his best talent, singing, and was left disappointed when all he got in return from the small Chinese boy was polite applause and a winning smile. But it was only to be expected, he had thought, upon hearing the other's singing voice. It hadn't been awe-inspiring but it had been beautiful and the teachers had nodded in approval right away; Yixing's was a voice that would soar.

He had never been angry or jealous, though, not even when Yixing had stole the show in dance lessons to quickly become the favorite next to prodigy Jongin. The two had ended up bonding over that, creating those memories of dance and sweat that Jongin had referred to in their first magazine interview.

Over the years, the distance had only grew bigger. Yixing topped him in all the lessons, except for public speaking but only because his Korean then had still needed work. In his second year as a trainee, he had even beat out Jongin to replace Jonghyun in SHINee's Japanese concert.

Yixing was -- is -- so very bright; the best trainee we've had in several years, they had said, he'll be something when he debuts.

And he is, Joonmyun thinks, clapping supportively as Yixing stands on stage wiping his tears with one hand while the other proudly clutched a gold award statue.

Sometimes he wishes that him and Yixing could have been closer, like Yixing and Yifan or Yixing and Jongin, but it's alright because he doesn't mind the distance so much.

Stars are meant to be watched from afar, anyway.
