Kibum is a man of mystery for many people, a boy that no one was able to understand, even some that have known him for most of his life. Jonghyun, his older brother, still considers him a puzzle that is unsolvable. Jinki has failed to know Kibum for that amount of time, having only met him in middle school, but Kibum once admitted that “you probably know me the best, out of this entire shit load.” Honestly, Jinki takes that as a compliment.
Out of the many things that Jinki knows about Kibum, he knows that he has always wanted to leave this city. It’s small, cramped, and everyone knows everyone. People that don’t fit the stereotype are looked down upon and regarded as outsiders, rarely accepted unless they accept themselves. Kibum just happened to be one of those people, one of those kids that didn’t want to go to church every weekend without any proof, one of those kids that would rather enjoy working later, and doing what was right now.
His parents covered it up by saying that he was going through stages of his life that would finally wear off. That he was doing this to get attention, and he would be back to normal. Jinki knows from the years of Kibum talking behind their backs that this was never true; they never truly loved him. “He was born good and just kept on getting worse,” they would say, shaking their heads and taking more sips of their coffees.
Jonghyun was no help, but maybe out of the small amount of things that he was able to do right, he introduced Kibum to one of his best friends. Sure, Kibum had Dongwoon and Jinwoon who were close to him, but never the amount of closeness that he would become with Jinki. Jinki was in Jonghyun’s grade, had stopped by his house by accident, and ended up meeting Kim Kibum instead.
“Just drive,” Kibum says. The car feels heavy with all the stuff in the back: Jinki’s suitcases filled with clothes, two boxes of books and other precious articles, and all of Kibum’s stuff. Jinki doubts they’ll have enough money for gas-but Kibum doesn’t care. The city fades away in the rear view mirror, like another life, like a part of their lives that they can finally throw away.
He looks happy, he seems happy, but Jinki can see the cracks in which he’s breaking apart, being torn by the fact that this is te final goodbye. Kibum told him not to tell anyone what was going on, where they were actually going, why they wouldn’t be going to school the next day.
The guilt sits heavy on his chest and Jinki can see it. He can see the sadness in his face, like a child that realizes that the final puzzle piece is missing-that the puzzle will never be complete.
“Where to?” Jinki asks absent-mindedly, his hands on ten and two, face straight ahead. He has looked at Kibum so many times that he doesn’t have to concentrate on his physical features anymore. Kibum slips his feet out of his shoes and puts his feet on the dashboard, resting his elbow on the side of the car door. Kibum hums.
“Anywhere would be nice,” Kibum answers, “Just run fast enough so they can’t catch us.”
Jinki nods, and presses his foot down on the accelerator.
