“What happened to Baekhyun?” Joonmyeon asks over coffee, pressed up against the wall of windows, watching the rain that hits the panes.

It’s a dreadful day and there aren’t that many people in the office; many have run away for their lunch breaks, leaving Jongin and Joonmyeon around the coffee machine. This is a ritual they have somehow picked up, watching the daily weather over a warm cup.

Jongin looks up from the contents of his paper cup to stare at Joonmyeon. His heart takes a straight stab and he coughs, kicking the ugly, red carpet that covers the floors of their floor.

Baekhyun is an uneasy subject, one that Jongin wouldn’t like to frequent often. People that knew of them ask often, though. Joonmyeon knew of them so he asks often. Anyone would have noticed that Baekhyun hadn’t been there at the Christmas party a few months ago. Jongin is even surprised that it has been so long.

“Hm?” Joonmyeon asks again, cocking his head to the side. His smiles are reassuring, and Jongin knows that he is only doing what he believes is best-but it’s almost overwhelming, the way the question smothers him. He would rather run away, find his computer and continue working. But Joonmyeon would find him the next day. Ask the same question.

“He moved away, had some problems with his family,” Jongin replies. That is almost true, he tells himself. Baekhyun’s family had moved to Seoul. But the only reason why they had moved to Seoul is because Baekhyun had landed a spot in a music company and couldn’t afford to lose Christmas and birthday celebrations. People adjust to Baekhyun. But Jongin couldn’t.

He couldn’t deal with the big city. Jongin had been raised in a small, rural town that relied itself on kimchi and fish sales. He only moved to Busan to go to university and then, eventually get his job. But Busan was still rather powerful and compressed, why Jongin went home to branch out every weekend.

He met Baekhyun through friends when Jongin didn’t have the time to go back home but still had his weekend. Chanyeol had dragged him out to a club, where he met Baekhyun’s dazzling eyes and glistening body, covered with a sheer layer of sweat. Baekhyun was gorgeous-and soon, with blind dates and cheesy catch phrases, they were a couple.

Jongin can’t remember when it got bad. They were perfect for each other, though. Baekhyun forced Jongin to get out and spread his wings, whilst Jongin forced Baekhyun to take a step back and look at the ups and downs before he made a final decision. Baekhyun made Jongin smile and Jongin made Baekhyun quiet and settle down. There were moments where they would just sit on the couch, listening to each other’s breath patterns, before Jongin would eventually laugh, grab hands, and kiss.

Baekhyun was the ecstasy that Jongin needed. Nights of depression turned to nights of lust as they rolled, pressed their bodies together, pant against each other’s lips. Jongin would wake up, praying that Baekhyun didn’t leave. “I’ll never leave,” Baekhyun promised, a small smile on his lips.

But Jongin’s wings could only stretch out so far. He didn’t want to reach out so far. He didn’t want to lose his job, his friends and his family just to follow Baekhyun’s dream. Baekhyun never asked if he’d follow him. One day, he packed up his bags and left. And even with Baekhyun’s new address in Seoul, Jongin never followed him.

Joonmyeon sighs. “That’s such a shame. You two were a great couple.”

Weren’t we.
