She digs her hands into her pocket, watching the sunrise. She left from the East, and she’ll return from the East. For years, she remembered the outline of her back as she walked away, back-pack over her shoulder and a strong stride. No one saw her out. No one was up, that’s why, only the small group of people in their community that had to get the farming or the fishing work started for the day. They were at the border of the community; they didn’t see them.
Jinhee’s parents wept by the loss of their daughter, wondering what had willed her to want to leave their small town. Dahee forced herself not to scoff-she knew their daughter better than they did, and she knew it. Jinhee may have acted nice and adorable for her parents just to have food and a family, but she hated it here. Everyone hated it here.
The community tried looking for her, Dahee’s father the town’s policeman spent hours combing the woods. They finally decided that she was gone, too far now for them to catch her. They turned to her in their investigation-did you know about this runaway? Do you know where she has run off to? Dahee did know. But to keep Jinhee safe, she replied no, she knew nothing. They finally gave up on Jinhee, and they just hoped that she would come back eventually.
Dahee sent her letters everyday with the help of Jiyeon, whose father worked in the city sixty-five miles away. She rarely got letters back-Jinhee was a busy person-but when she did, she would delight herself by reading them in the dark with a flashlight, devouring every word like it was a little sprinkle, filling her with some unexplainable happiness. If her father ever found out about these notes, he would probably shun her to the highest degree.
There would be moments of laughter or of sadness. Jinhee has met these two girls named Miso and Soojin that Dahee thinks that she will find funny and cool, and that makes Dahee excited. There are stories of happiness, like when Jinhee found a job thanks to Miso and how she accidentally hit one of the workers on the head, to sad stories like how their plumbing stopped working and she had to take small bathes in the kitchen sink at her work instead.

The air has turned frigid when Jiyeon hands her a letter. It has been a long time since the last time Jinhee has written and Dahee has gotten worried. Jiyeon doesn’t accept the letter she hands her, and it lays on the porch of Dahee’s house until she finally picks it up, slipping it behind Jinhee’s letter. Jiyeon doesn’t return later on in the day to accept the letter, just drives back to town.
The letter is everything that Dahee has been waiting for. Jinhee is picking her up. Two months from now, of course, but she is picking her up, and Jinhee promises everything.
Dahee waits in the field where she said goodbye to Jinhee, watching as everything ruffles in the November breeze. Her packed bag sits in the wheat beside her legs, as she watches the hill that slopes down to their small community. Jinhee will walk down that hill to greet her.
A figure appears over the mountains and Dahee smiles. It takes her a second to recognize her. She has changed just a little, with sharper eyes, lighter skin and darker hair, but the smile is just the same, and the way she runs is just the same as they push their legs to move faster, so that they can reach each other faster.
Dahee jumps into Jinhee’s arms, wrapping her legs around her torso and kissing her passionately on the lips, missing the off-cherry flavour it always brought. Jinhee is smiling ear-to-ear when they break.
“I’ve missed you so much,” Dahee admits, her eyes welling up with tears. Jinhee kisses them away.
“I missed you so much, too.” Jinhee sets her down onto her feet and kisses her lips once more, running her hands around Dahee’s neck and calming her down, kissing her tears away. “Let’s go-together.”
