Kibum walks on the opposite side of the street as Jonghyun. They both keep their heads down, Kibum’s listening to his music and scrolling through his library, whilst Jonghyun plays on his phone, desperately trying to find that high score. Even if they walk on different sides of the street, live across from each other when it comes to their apartments, or that they work in the same office building-Kibum and Jonghyun will never look up and see what has been beside them the whole time.

If they had, Kibum would have probably started laughing first. Jonghyun is a short, goofy guy, and Kibum has a thing for men like those, men that he loves as friends before he loves as lovers. Jonghyun, being the light-hearted man he was, would laugh back-mainly because he would notice how beautiful Kibum looked when he laughed.

If they had looked up, Kibum would watch as Jonghyun launched himself in thousands of one-night stands with girls that Kibum doesn’t remember. His apartment smells like sex, but Kibum will help him when it’s the middle of the night and Jonghyun has no one else to turn to, even with the smell. Once Jonghyun was asleep, Kibum would walk out the door, making sure to shut it softly behind him.

If they had looked up, Jonghyun would know about Minho-Kibum’s best friend. He’ll watch from the kitchen at one of Kibum's glorious parties as Minho grabs onto Kibum’s neck and pulls him fiercely into a kiss, only to push him away the next day. If Jonghyun had looked up, had become so attached to Kibum, he would eventually beat up Minho, get beat up the next day, and swear under his breath as Kibum dressed his wounds.

“Don’t kiss him ever again,” Jonghyun would say.

If they had looked up, they had noticed that they were just seconds apart; Jonghyun would get a call from Kibum, begging for his attention. The sex comes first but the confessions come second, with crying and swearing from Kibum and honest replies from Jonghyun, until they both realize that they are really dumb; why they are perfect for each other.

They’ll end up running away when their bills are paid and find a small country town to settle down. They cannot adopt, or maybe Kibum doesn’t want to, so they stick with just themselves, filling their own loneliness.

But they don’t look up.

Jonghyun finds a boy named Jinki but they break up. Minho proposes to Kibum but Kibum eventually runs away. On a night of hate and solitude, they’ll shuffle down the same street, walking opposite to each other. Kibum bumps into Jonghyun. They don’t look up, they just continue down the way.

Jonghyun finds a pair of keys in his pocket that night to the room across the hall. He hands the keys instead of handing them to the owner.

goodness, anon, i knew that any response to this prompt was likely to break my heart but you broke it so beautifully ;~;

i love contrasting storylines, the what-ifs, but especially If they had, Kibum would have probably started laughing first. Jonghyun is a short, goofy guy, and Kibum has a thing for men like those, men that he loves as friends before he loves as lovers. oh god anon, i loved this. all the 'what if's and 'could have been's :( i really like how you portray their relationships with others (key/minho and jonghyun/onew) and how you write it so matter of fact but it contains a world of emotion. and then that ending of how they are so close but they don't take that chance :(
