the thing about taking what isn't yours is that those people, the original owners of the dreams you hijack? they never get to wake up.
--
and sungyeol knows it is cruel and wrong, but it's unconscious. he can remember all the dreams he takes, but it is the first dream he had stolen that stays with him the longest. in that one, he takes the dream of a boy who is in love with his best friend. it was a simple dream - all there was were two boys, a swimming pool and a remote controlled helicopter.
in this dream, sungyeol is the best friend. the boy who is in love with him is beautiful, with the kind of face girls trip over their feet for, but in this world, he only stares at sungyeol. and it's a nice dream, because the way the boy smiles at sungyeol is so bright that sungyeol thinks it's almost real. like the sun beating down their backs is real. like he's actually the best friend this boy is in love with, not an impostor.
the boy just watches him fly the remote controlled helicopter around the compound. the remote is heavy in his hands, and that's all they do for hours. he cannot remember what they had talked about, only that the boy laughed often.
"hey," the boy says, when the sun begins to dip below the horizon. sungyeol is still flying the helicopter. "i love you."
he says it quickly, like he's giving sungyeol time to mishear him. the helicopter spins out of control and crashes into the deck with a sharp crack.
sungyeol jolts up from the bed just as the sun rises. somewhere in the world, a boy will not wake up.

there is a reason why sungyeol drinks an unhealthy amount of coffee.

i mean, yeah, it could have been expanded, but damn, damn i think it's perfect as it is. i like it when a story leaves me hanging only enough to contemplate, but not the sort of disappointment when a story is cut too short. i just, wow. i'm sad now.
