Sungyeol has the remarkable ability to tell the truth like it’s nothing, like it’s not true at all, which Myungsoo envies because its easy to panic and think of words that aren’t true. It’s why Sungyeol can’t act - because actors have to lie always when they face the camera. They have to become someone they aren’t, they have to make the audience believe in that person, that their own experiences are actually the character that they’re playing - the character that is the lie. The truth gets stuck in Myungsoo’s throat, like he swallowed a loaf of bread that lodged itself against his vocal chords and no amount of liquid will dissolve it.

When Sungyeol is frustrated, he beats things, screams it out, lets the entire world know. When he comes home after failing an audition, he comes home and his head his bowed and his shoulders are too drooped for a pigeon to land on and his eyes are red as the dawn. Myungsoo can tell in the way he slams the cupboards in the kitchen open, in the way his hands shake when he pours himself a drink. In the way his adam’s apple quivers before he drinks, like he’s swallowing something heavy, or trying to keep down the truth.

But it always comes out after his hands shake and he taps his fingers against the counter and he spits out, “I’ll get it next time,” with rage in his eyes. Myungsoo sees the way he looks at himself in the reflection in the glass, like he doesn’t know what’s wrong with him, like acting hasn’t been all he’s trained to be for so long, like he’s a failure.

These are the times when Myungsoo wants to pull him close and whisper. “Its okay, I love you,” because it’s the truth, and his arms ache and his throat itches and he leans forward and bumps their shoulders together and opens his mouth but instead he says, “next time.” And instead of a kiss, Sungyeol laughs bitterly and shoves him with ache in his eyes.

Myungsoo can talk about anything, from the way the spotlights shine in Sungyeol’s eyes to the way the weather has been unnaturally cold. He can talk about ramyeon and he can talk about working out, and he can talk about the crick in his neck from when he fell asleep in the van. He can talk about little things so truthfully, but those aren’t what he wants to really say. He doesn’t want to put his hand on Sunyeol’s knee and talk about dogs anymore. He doesn’t want to lean his head on Sungyeol’s shoulder in the van and laugh about their script for the next show. He doesn’t want to talk about how overheated he is at practice.

What he wants to tell him, is what Sungyeol finally leans over in the van and threads his fingers through his hair to pull him close. It’s the way his lips brush the tip of his ear when he whispers to him, “the truth is, I love you,” with a shy smile, and kisses him on his temple against his hairline.

More than anything in the world Myungsoo wants to say it back. He wants to lean in and whisper it back or catch his lips with his own before he can pull away, before that growing blush can grow further. Instead that lump returns to his throat and traps his words. Instead his joints freeze up and his breathing stops and his eyes widen and all he can do is focus on the heat of his lips against his skin, throbbing.

It only lasts a moment, but Sungyeol’s moved on, impatiently playing with his phone. He swallows at the lump, at the timpani drum in his ears, making it hard to think. It takes him until the van has stopped and for the others to pile out before he acts. They’re the last one’s climbing out when he latches onto him from behind and presses a quick kiss against the back of his neck. Sungyeol shrieks and falls out of the van. He climbs over him with a smirk, feels giddy, lighter than ever, and pulls him up to his feet. He wants more than anything to tell him, still, but for now the overjoyous glimmer in Sungyeol’s eyes - like he’s a spotlight - is enough for him.
