By morning he remembers, the fort they built in her bedroom. Her hair was like the white sheets hiding them; black curtains fell around her face, hiding what she was coloring. Byunghee tried to peer through only to be swatted. They were eight.
At age ten he’s running after her in a vast garden. She swears she saw something magical; he’s having a hard time keeping up. Her laughter leads him and in the center, he stops. There is only magic in the roses she’s enamored by. Back then; he’s sure the magic was in her.
Sixteen years old, he’s chasing her again. She was doing a magic trick and was off with his wallet. Same garden, this time he’s a little faster. His hands reach out and grab the longhaired girl and tug her to him. The wallet falls, the roses are white now, he can’t remember if they were red or pink… He’s startled by how pretty her eyes are. She’s grown up well. He kisses her flushed face, she giggles, and he whispers her name. “Jooyeon.”
She smiles, “Kiss me, Byunghee.”
They’re awakening at the maid’s voice trying to cover them up before their parents learn of their children’s affair. It’s too late, parents spill into the courtyard and the screaming spills into their world. Jooyeon stares bleary eyed from father to mother, then to Byunghee’s parents. They’re too young to completely understand, but sometimes people aren’t supposed to be that close.
Byunghee’s screaming again, chasing Jooyeon again. She’s being pulled out of the room. Their seventeen-year-old worlds are collapsing, they both realize as they reach out. It’s too late. She’s gone. He wonders when things will be normal again, sitting at the dining table with his father in a completely different world. Here, his parents have divorced; his father won the Seoul estate. Jooyeon’s mother won in the divorce settlements and lives in Japan. Nothing is normal; he looks at his father who does not know how to raise a son. He speaks to a man who treats him like a brother. Phone calls to his mother make him realize how torn his life is. He wonders if Jooyeon is okay on her own.

Eight years later, Byunghee has a job interview at ten. He’s grabbing a cup of coffee with Seungho, they’re chatting up about lives. Things seem good for them both. By chance, he looks out the window and spots a shorthaired woman heading past. He blinks in surprise, thinking, “She looks familiar.” One sip of cold coffee later and he’s flying out the door of the coffee hut, Seungho left sitting there with his new phone.
“Jooyeon!” He screams, running down the street, she doesn’t stop. “Jooyeon!”
She stops, turns in confusion. Her eyes widen in shock and she nearly stumbles back, but he throws his arms around her. Tugs her close and kisses her mouth. Their world freezes.
“I wish it snowed always,” the voice of seven year old Jooyeon floods his mind. Suddenly, he feels cold and when they pull apart, staring into one another’s eyes, snow drifts down. Flakes catch in her eyelashes and he laughs, brushing snowflakes from her cheeks.
“It’s snowing.” He whispers, “Just like you wanted.”
“Mm…” Jooyeon laughs, turning her face up to the sky, “It’s August, Byunghee.”
