But as the two stared at the oblivious Amber in her gown, radiating under the soft glow of the ballroom with a butterfly clip Krystal forced her to wear in her hair, they thought that maybe this wasn't a good idea.
"I met her first, man, we've been best friends since kindergarten," Henry whined, eyes never leaving Amber's surprising lipgloss smile.
Kris grimaced. "Dude, the girl never likes the best friend. She always likes the mysterious guy," he said. "That mysterious guy is me."
"Do you even watch tv? Have you ever watched The Lizzie McGuire Movie?" Henry asked in reply.
Kris narrowed his eyes and made a face. "Oh fuck, you're right, Gordo got Lizzie." He then shook his head and frowned some more. "Not the point though. This isn't a movie. I'm asking her to dance with me first."
"No, you little --"
Kris briskly weaved his way towards Amber, feeling Henry grab at his blazer every few seconds and slipping out of his grasp just as easily. He got to Amber first, thanks to his long legs and the fact that people parted like the red sea when they saw his face.
"Am-Amber," he stammered as he tapped her on the shoulder. She spun around with raised eyebrows and damn it, she's so cute --
"Yeah?" Amber suddenly laughed at the his expression. His ego deflated even more but he shook it off, reminding himself to stay cool.
As if god was on his side, the pop song playing moments ago faded and was replaced by a mellow love song. He gulped and held out a hand. "Dance with me?"
Amber smiled up at him, all surprised laughter as she nodded. She snorted in disbelief as he tried to arrange their limbs in the right positions. "My hands don't go there, bro," she said as he lifted her hands with a panicked expression on his face. She maneuvered his hands on her hips and slung her arms on his shoulders as high as her four-inch heels would allow her.
Amber was eye level with Kris's chin, Kris's arms were too long, and the two of them didn't know how to do this swaying dance thing at all -- it was all kinds of awkward and uncomfortable, but they thought it was...nice, and they shrugged it off with small smiles and quiet chuckles.
He felt extra aware of how his hands were on her tiny hips and how soft her lips looked, magnified by how close they were standing next to each other. Kris tried looking everywhere but straight into her eyes. Amber just seemed to be laughing at him silently. He wondered if she could feel his heart beat faster under his bouttonniere.
"Are you okay?" she said, smiling with a hint of concern. He gave her a tight smile back and shook his head.
"No, you're just - you look really good tonight," he said easily. His face fell as soon as he realized what he said. Amber made a sound between flattered and amused, and he expected a mocking comeback, but she said nothing else and just gave him a grin that made his stomach drop.
He locked eyes with Henry from across the dancefloor, where he resigned himself to eating shrimp cocktail. Kris just gave him a smug, triumphant grin, pretending that, no, his hands weren't extra sweaty right now, and no, he was absolutely not falling for his best friend.
