The Plan; Baro/CNU anonymous August 25 2012, 07:04:48 UTC
“Why do we bother going to work every day?”

“To make money.”

“Yeah, but for what?”

“To pay rent? Food? Pretty much everything?”

They were driving home at five in the afternoon, and Baro was gazing out at the gray buildings and drab billboards and uninteresting pedestrians they passed every day. This scene and the conversation that came with it were familiar to Dongwoo, although the kid in the passenger seat was looking more melancholy than usual.

“Is that really all?

“You know, last time we went through this you went out and dyed your hair blond. Why don’t you just get a tattoo and move on?” CNU laughed, and that was usually where it ended, but Sunwoo spoke up again.

“Aren’t you tired, or, I don’t know, bored? I go do the same job every day for people that I can’t stand because they never have anything interesting to say. We’ve been sharing the same apartment for three years. We haven’t rearranged the furniture since I moved in. We’ve even been eating the same cereal for breakfast for the past ten months-”

“But you love Koi Flakes…”

“-and I don’t really remember what happened six weeks ago exactly, but I still know what we did because we go through the same routine day after day after day after day! It’s ridiculous.”

CNU was smirking when Sunwoo crossed his arms and slumped back in his chair as the car slowed to a stop at a red light.

“So what do you suggest we do?”

“I don’t know. Leave.”

“Leave to go where?”

“Anywhere! Anywhere. We could grab a plane or a taxi or we could even take a subway to the next town for all I care, I just want to get out of here.”

Dongwoo signaled and changed lanes. Baro had gone back to looking out the window, and was murmuring his replies.

“But what about our jobs?”

“Get fired from them. It’s not like we’re going anywhere with them anyway, I hate mine, and you can’t say you love yours.”

“So, how are we going to pay for this trip of yours, Sunwoo?”

“It’s not like we’ve bought anything big lately. You’ve got money, and so do I.”

They turned the corner and came up onto their street. Baro could see their building and straightened in his seat, ready to get out.

“All right. So we go, get as far as we can get on a full tank of gas, maybe a little farther. What are we going to do once we get there?”

Sunwoo shrugged absentmindedly, his hand on the door handle as they approached their apartment complex.

“I’m not sure, but… I guess we’d figure it out.”

Before Baro could take off his seatbelt, CNU sped up the car.

“Hey, what are you doing? You just passed our place…”

“I know.”

“…Why?!”

“You said we could go, right? Forget our jobs and leave? Well, that’s what we’re doing. You just planned it, right now.”

“Yeah, but I was kidding, come on!” But Baro was laughing when he nudged the driver lightly. Dongwoo rolled down all four windows and popped open the sun roof, their bangs whipping around in the deluge of wind that began to fill the car.

“Well, it’s too late now, we can’t make a u-turn for another half a mile, and when it comes up, I’m not going to!”

“This is insane.”

“What?!” It was hard to be heard over the sound of rushing air.

“This is insane! What about our clothes, and our toothbrushes?! What is our landlord going to say?!”

CNU turned on the radio and gave a small sigh. “Well, when we get to where we’re going… we’ll figure it out then, right?!”

Sunwoo opened his mouth to shout again, a bit louder now to be heard over the song playing, but instead sat back and turned the music up so it boomed through the speakers.

“I guess we will!”

So they drove for hours, going any which way, as long as they were moving forward.
