Jiyoon is fetching some water when she sees her squatting in the shallow lake.
She doesn’t know her name, she doesn’t know anything about her, and for a brief moment, she doesn’t know how to walk, because she’s stuck in her spot, watching the girl move her hand in the water, her fair, wet skin dancing in the sunlight, like scales to a fish. But she isn’t a mermaid at all-she’s an angel.
Jiyoon blinks and remembers that if she doesn’t move quickly, her mother will certainly be mad at her, so she walks onto the dock, her pail swinging beside her as she takes every step. It’s hinges are old and rusty, so they scream out each time it swings. She wishes that it wasn’t so loud, so that she couldn’t have disturbed the beautiful picture inches away from her.
The angel turns around, the water rippling as she moves and her wings opening out, stretching for the skies.
She’s beautiful, Jiyoon thinks, watching as the water hits her ankles. Her hair is a beautiful reddish brown colour, and her eyes are a dazzling amber colour that reminds Jiyoon of the red leaves in autumn. She has a soft face and piercing eyes that soften as she cocks her head to the side. In some ways, she’s adorable, with her eyes filled with such curiosity that she has only seen on her sister’s Sohyun’s face.
“Hello?” Jiyoon asks, and the girl takes a step back, slipping on a rock and crashing into the shallow water.
Jiyoon drops her bucket, jumping into the water. She grabs onto the angel’s forearm and pulls her up so that she can stand. She has been cut on the side of the head, and she reaches up to touch the wound. Her eyes widen at the sight of blood, her mouth slightly agape. “What is this?” she asks, and Jiyoon is surprised not to find any kind of accent in her voice. But her voice is adorable and sweet and cheerful to Jiyoon’s ears.
“It’s blood. If you allow me, I can help you,” Jiyoon suggests. The angel smiles and nods shyly. Jiyoon smiles, and fills her bucket with the lake water, before outstretching her hand and smiling at the angel, whose wings are tucked in safely, dripping with water droplets like wet icicles.
“Thank you,” the angel says, following her barefoot back to her house. Jiyoon smiles, shrugging as they walk over the uneven ground. Jiyoon had wanted to give her her shoes, but the angel had kindly refused, and whenever she walked into a rock or a twig or a hot surface, Jiyoon could hear her wince.
“We’re almost there.” The angel smiles, and starts running, so Jiyoon is dragged by her, and she’s surprised by her strength. She can see her rippling arm muscles and wonders why an angel would need arms like that if you live in a place like heaven.
“I’m Hyuna,” she says, her hand warm in Jiyoon’s.
Jiyoon smiles, running to catch up with Hyuna, the water in Jiyoon’s bucket sloshing as they take each step.
