They’d called his home and said it would take a month to finalize the arrangements, but they’d be willing to start his training immediately. Minho’s mother had picked up the phone and afterwards, her face flushed with incitement, had told Minho in a happy, wistful voice. Our baby, flying the coop, said and betrayed in so many words and gestures. His father, a smiling, accepting presence, and so there was nothing to stop him now.
Click, as his life assembles itself into place like so many bricks coming together under the analytical, unseeing gaze of an automaton, fitted firmly between layers of grout, ten million parts self-assembling into a barrier, sounds multiplying on each other. If he steps back far enough to hear them, it only sounds like one.
There’s nothing to do, now, except observe. The world around him is so big, and yet his world is just six people. There’s Jinki, Taemin, Jonghyun, and Kibum. The managers. Then there’s everyone else. He feels stationary-bonded in the center of a citadel as the terrain beneath him claws upward and cleaves to his legs. And then he’s pulled down under, left to watch helplessly as life moves through him.
