Ryeowook’s a mere runt in a sea bursting with single-celled life forms, but that doesn’t stop him from eyeing the larger protist with appreciation. For three life cycles now he’s wanted to tell the other cell “your arrangement of glycoproteins is absolutely stunning,” and finally the microcurrents have carried him close enough to do so.
He tentatively closes the distance between them, extending his pseudopod one micron at a time, and brushes Jongwoon’s outer membrane. The contact of ligand on receptor sends phosphorylation cascades through them both, and within moments Ryeowook finds himself completely enveloped by the other’s embrace.
Too late does he realize the enzymes burrowing holes in his membrane are not, in fact, romantic gifts of nutrient molecules. As streams of his cytoplasm rushes out into the endosome, Ryeowook feels a twinge of regret at their meeting’s unfortunate outcome.
Well, they always did say “love is all consuming.”
