It was morning when Jiyong came to the recruiting office and signed his life away to fight a war against the Abstract.
By noon he’d been shipped to the front, where Fear had dug its trenches- but he dug his own grooves, a tenderfoot sinking into old, well-worn paths. He threw grenades until the earth shook and all the notes in the world went flat.
Once, Jiyong found Courage, lying wounded and alone. He stole its colors and marched across the world, over a land laced with landmines, over limitations drawn by Tradition and Law.
Once, Love found Jiyong, wounding him, nicking his heart, leaving him with an incurable feeling for an impossible boy.
But still he fought, against Truth, which he found too hard to reconcile; Space, which threw him a thousand miles from home; and Creativity, a battle he barely won with a bottle of bleach.
And then it was night. He waged war with Time, a long (or short or endless) battle against the thing he’d been fighting all along. He stopped it, shot it, only to watch in horror as the minuteshoursdays dripped beyond his calloused fingers.
He started to realize how much he’d already lost.
