“Please excuse me.”
Lunch time, busy hour. What could she do other than accepting a stranger on her half-empty table?
One of the things she disliked about Korea was the fact there were food places that put you with strangers at peak hours, when the tables were mostly full, instead of letting the new visitors waited until someone finished their meal. Thinking much about the loss profit, she guessed.
A broken utensil.
That was the second one, couples fought in the open just like the daily dramas.
She sighed, and signed the waitress to give her more water, before slipping a strand of hair into the back of her ear.
It got even louder, the fight from the next table, while everyone was just openly staring at them, hushing to their own partners and friends.
Waitress came and poured some water into her glass.
The girl started screaming.
She stood up, took her full glass of water, walked into the direction and just like that she splashed the water at the couple.
Maybe for a second, the time stopped for everyone there, except her.
“What-”
“Have some shame, why are you going around shoving your shit to people’s faces, go back to your home if you guys are going to rip each other’s out.”
Around her, people were starting to list the reasons why she was a kind of bitch.
First, she was butting in other people’s business, and not just that she threw water at them. Second, she cursed and daringly showing how annoyed she got but at the same time, she was not even raising her voice. She talked so calmly like she was not angry and just fine, and that kind of attitude was even scarier.
But she was thanked nonetheless, yes, right until the other girl explode and tore her hair out.
It got even messier than before. She couldn’t even clearly remember how she got out of that, just pair of hands shielding her and probably the staffs too at the other end. They seemed to take her outside and she walked away just like that.
*
“You sound tired, you can’t sleep again?”
“Eung.”
“I’ve told you to take the pills, it’s okay to use it just once in a while.”
“And I’ve told you that I don’t need them. My mind is just a maze of puzzle that needs to be shut. That’s why I can’t get to rest.”
Her sister saved a breath.
“Go out and have some fun with your friends, Darling. You know, you can let people in and not every relationship will end up like-.”
“Nah, Jessi, I don’t want to talk about it right now- Oh, I found it, talk to you later, okay, bye.”
It had been only two months since she decided to live apart from her parents and came to Korea. Her bad spatial skill and how the land was just crowded with buildings still made her lost from time to time.
Why did she go there if she disliked it that much? She was not sure; probably she was trying to not causing arguments about how unsafe Europe was for a woman her age to live alone, when they had no relatives there. Or maybe she was just running away from her old environment, her friends and an ex-boyfriend. Just she wouldn’t admit it.
She stepped inside the place and an old man behind the wooden counter greeted her with a knowing smile.
“Took you longer today,” he said.
The end of her lips was raised a tiny bit, “I got down on a different bus stop today, it was a bit confusing. Did any customer come?”
The old man laughed, “This girl, really only focusing on work. Did you hate talking to me that much? Yes, and he asked for a cup of chrysanthemum tea.”
“Of course I have to do my work seriously, since Grandpa paid for it.”
It was a small bookstore and library that contained mostly with imported and English book. She liked that place since not much people went there, though the salary was not big but she could cover her food expenses with that. It gave her some sense of effort, that she actually did something on her own. Well, she didn’t have to worry about the other things since her parents were still insisting on paying for her rent and tuition.
On that place they provided some drinks and snacks to be eaten if the customer wanted to stay there to read. Since there were only her and the Grandpa there, she took care of everything when she was on duty while the Grandpa could just stay on the counter or got some rest.
“Here your order, Sir. If you need anything else, I’ll be at the counter.”
She took a quick glance when she put the beverage down; he was not a regular customer. In fact, it was the first time she ever saw him since she started working there.
This place is slowly gaining new customers, she thought.
She went on to finish the other tasks, stacking up the books, putting it back in the right order and places, making sure there was no dust covering it. Some customers came to buy and order books but no one stayed. Two hours passed by and that customer was the only one who preoccupied their reading corner.
“Sorry, can I get another cup of tea?”
She had nothing more to do and drowned her self into an old novel she found in the counter (probably the old man was reading it before) when he approached her. She headed to the kitchen right away, busying her self heating the water only to find him following her when she turned around.
There was something in his stare that made her felt uncomfortable.
“What?”
He smiled, “you’re that girl, right?”
Soojung scoffed silently, thinking that guys should really work on their flirting strategies. People had been using that same trick for ancient times.
“Who?” She asked, pouring hot water over the flower leaves. “The one you met on a night club or the one you saw somewhere in your dream?”
“No, I don’t think I ever dreamt about you, but I definitely saw you on the restaurant the other day. Didn’t you take lunch around Hongdae?”
She thought to her self. Hongdae?
“Sugar?”
“One small block, please.”
Oh right.
“Was there a shitty couple’s fight?”
He chuckled.
“Yes, and you definitely butted in that shitty thing.”
“Hmm.”
She handed him the drink.
So there was someone who saw and remembered her face clearly. Or would everyone there recognize her if they met on the street? Well, not my business.
He took a sip. “You made a good tea, but don’t you remember me?”
“Some rhyme there, and not at all. Did you saw me somewhere else too before?”
The old clock on the wall chimed six times.
“Oh, I have to go. Thank you for the tea.” He extended a hand, “I’m Kang Minhyuk, and I shared your table on the restaurant that day.”
*
Soojung sighed at the sound of ringing bell, a new little ornament the old man had put on their front door. It was two minutes away from their closing time and she could tell the one who was coming. In fact, it was always that same one person, for over, let her count, three weeks.
“You know that I won’t give in to whatever plans and excuses you give me today too, right?” She fires out, preparing her self for another non-sense talk battle. But he didn’t give her an answer, so unlikely of him.
“Wh-”
Instead of a wavy head and stupid eye smile, her eyes met a pair of blue eyes and high nose bridge that were curtained by long-wavy yellow lock.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” She talked in perfect English. “Okay, well-yes, well, what can I do for you?”
Her name was Jaine and she came from Canada or probably somewhere in Scottland, or was it England? She got to know that little bookstore from an acquaintance and in need of some classic literature books that she couldn’t find anywhere in mainstream bookstore in that land.
Soojung found three out of five books she requested. They didn’t have the last one but she was sure that she saw the other one around somewhere just a few days ago. Did it get sold when she wasn’t in shift?
Jaine was thankful nonetheless.
She glanced at the clock as she packed it for her. Past ten minutes from their closing time.
Soojung bade Jaine goodbye at the doorstep, watching her last customer for the day disappearing into the night. She shivered, the summer night breeze felt bizarrely cold, and rushed inside. She glanced at the clock again and started to check around the store.
Water off, books in order, electricity off.
When she changed the ‘open’ sign into ‘closed’, she took a peak at the clock once more. Past thirty minutes.
He finally gave up, she guessed.
*
Soojung realized that she was distracted three days after the first night Minhyuk didn’t come. It was half past her shift time and she started to rummage through the counter’s drawers out of boredom. There, inside the fourth one, she found the book that the foreign customer, Jaine, looked for. That was why she felt like she had seen it around before. She remembered throwing it there when Minhyuk bothered her a week ago.
Dang it, Jung!
The realization that Minhyuk could actually affect her that much bewildered her beyond her own belief. Like, what did that guy actually do? He only visited every night, on their closing time, trying to befriend her and asking her out, which she always brushed off every time. It was not like they talked or shared a deep meaningful conversation with each other.
How could it matter to me whether he’s coming or not?
A conditioning.
Fuck, this brain.
*
He still did not show up for the rest of the week or the next week. It didn’t matter much to her anymore. Well, she thought of him once in a while, boys are the same they won’t stay long when you don’t let them get their way, but she got over it quick and grabbed her right mind back.
It was already the fourth months she stayed there. College life was still in an easy pace; she got a lot of free times she could use to finish her assignments, working part-time or spend it wandering around alone. She gained a close friend and was now able to memorize places, streets and routes. Because of her temper, she avoided eating out and packed her own lunch or got a takeaway so that bad incident would not happen again.
The old man told her one day while laughing, that she was actually adapting really well, though she still has to work on her attitude.
*
She was walking back home from a get-together party when she felt like being followed. It was past midnight and she was all alone in that alley. She cursed inside, blaming the event that got out of hand it finished really late; she really wouldn’t go if not for the respect of the seniors.
What should she do? Should she run?
No.
If she ran away, there were possibilities that whoever it was following her was a faster runner. Also, she was a bit under influence of alcohol so she wouldn’t know what could happen while she was running.
So she turned around.
“Who are you?” She shouted.
She had to gather the courage to do that, hypnotizing self that she was her father’s daughter, a boxer’s daughter.
“Show your self!”
A shadow moved in the dark.
And it suddenly dashed forward to her.
She didn’t have the time to digest everything and was ready to scream when a hand covered her mouth and she was eye to eye with small eyes under a cap. She felt her pupil went larger while the man in front of her grew a smile.
“You really are something,” he said, “I’ll let go of you now, don’t scream, okay?”
Unconsciously, she nodded.
He carefully took one step away, letting go of his hand that covered her mouth.
It was not even half a second after that she immediately shouted at him.
“YOU! What the heck are you trying to do, you jerk!”
He pouted and gave an unpleasant look at her.
“Tch, I’ve told you, no screaming, people are sleeping.”
“To hell with-”
And she was being pushed to the wall, with Minhyuk’s hand on her neck and waist and his lips on hers; kissing her so deep she hit and grabbed his shoulder for air instead of pushing him away. He sucked on her lower lips, making her moan at the sensation it gave, biting it to make his way inside her mouth, licking her entire cavern and sucking her tongue.
“I miss you.”
Soojung froze at the confession.
It felt warm and sincere.
Minhyuk kissed her again, slowly and softly this time, nibbling on her lips as if was brushing. She let him do that, not resisting or replying either.
A moment passed after he stopped. Her mind was clouded, she was confused, so much. She was still weighing of what to do when her hand worked on its own, and she was slapping him.
“I don’t have time for your game.”
“I’m not-”
“If you’re trying to find a toy-”
“Soojung, I already said I’m not playing with you. Will you at least try to listen to what I’m saying first?”
He was grabbing her so hard, teeth gritted, eyes staring into her intensely.
Sighing, Soojung admitted defeat. She hated complicated things.
“What do you want?”
Minhyuk smiled.
“Cook for me. It’s my birthday.”
*
Soojung never imagined that she would have him sitting on her small couch eating the food she freshly cooked. He made a small tower from a few pieces of chocopie and put a candle on top of it, asking her to sing the birthday song and he blew the candle off grinning widely. She wouldn’t eat the sweet thing no matter what he said so he devoured it alone.
He kissed her again when she told him that he should go back home at that rate. She was tipsy after three and a half cans of beer, so when he told her to kiss him back, she did it, making him groan because she actually kissed really well.
“How I wished you were this submissive every time I tried to talk to you. We could at least have a decent conversation, if not intimate.” He whispered, before going back enjoying her kisses.
She woke up the in morning in her own bed with light headache and not missing any clothes. He was there beside her, sleeping quietly. Soojung sighed, amazed that they didn’t end up having a drunk sex, that he didn’t try to get advantage of her condition.
She took a peek of him before going out of her bed. She had a class starting in 30 minutes.
He hadn’t wake up when she left that morning and she didn’t bother to wake him up because who knew what on earth would happen when he was “sober” while she was in a rush.
What she didn’t expect was to find him on her couch, when she got back home, with a totally different clothes from the last time.
“How did you got in?” Her eyes fixed fiercely on him.
He smiled.
“I saw you typing the passcode.”
Soojung thought she probably had lost her ability to be angry. Usually she would have thrown things at that kind of situation, but she just chose to throw her self in the couch beside him. She closed her eyes, massaging the bridge of her nose. Maybe it was the effect of going to class before completely getting rid of her hangover, she felt drained. Or maybe it was him that made her weary. She wasn’t used to deal with someone like him.
“Whatever, I don’t care. Do whatever you want to do. Just don’t disturb and annoy me, I’m-.”
Minhyuk was closing in beside her, and in no time, she was enveloped by his two arms with his chest sticking to her back. He put a kiss on the crown of her head.
“That was one of the longest sentence you ever said to me. I’ll quietly stay here.” He said, before hugging her even tighter.
Soojung felt her tensed muscle gradually unwind, and she finally leaned on him.
*
“If I sleep with you, would you leave me?”
They were lying on her bed one night when she asked him. Despite the dim yellow light, she still could notice the frown and dark shade that passed his face. After spending some time with him, she imagines two responses for her offer, he would accept it gladly or he would be angry.
But the Kang Minhyuk in front of her at the time was smiling, reaching for her hand to be hold.
“Stupid, you’ve slept with me.”
Soojung tore their holding hands away.
“Don’t play dumb with me.”
Minhyuk scooped her into his embrace.
“You are tired, Soojung. Let’s get some rest.”
She pulled her body slightly so she could see him clearly.
“I’m serious.” She said again, now holding his face.
She was determined, she would end his stupid game tonight and he wouldn’t have the reason to disturb her anymore.
She pecked his lips once, twice and thrice before fully kissing him. She was making him lying fully on the bed and climbed on top of him while her tongues seek its way inside his mouth. Soojung played her tongue on his before sucking it, she knew he liked it the most every time they shared a kiss.
But no, he didn’t. Of course he loved her kisses and just anything about her, but not that night, not when all she had inside her head was a silly plan.
He grabbed her shoulder and pushed her away.
“Soojung, stop.”
She stared dumbstruck at him for a second before kissing him again.
“Why? I’m not doing as well as other girls usually did? What about this?”
She was grinding her hips on him now, her hot breath fanning his face.
It took a lot of self control for Minhyuk to not let her continue and pushed her away from him. He turned the table and now she was pinned on to the mattress with him above her.
“Soojung, I said stop! What the heck are you doing?!”
It was the first time she ever saw his eyes that scary. A single tear escaped her eyes, and she started screaming.
“Stop playing good guy, I know you will leave! You will leave just like how he left after he got what he wanted from me! Man are the same, just take it now and leave me alone I’m tired of your game!!”
His eyes widened as he heard it. Now he knew the cause of her behavior. He had guessed that there must be something in her past that made her act coldly. He just never expected it would be that…terrible.
He felt awful, but he knew the better. She didn’t need some words of comfort, she couldn’t be convinced that way.
“Okay then, let’s try, let’s do that.”
She stopped crying at that.
He muttered the apology inside for deciding to use that situation. Just he didn’t know any other way to make her realize that he was different, he was not someone from her past.
He kissed her, his most lustful kiss he ever gave to her, devouring her lips and face. He licked and bit her earlobe, leaving his mark on her neck all the way down to her exposed shoulder. She shrieked from the pain but he ignored it and continued to attack her. Her clothes were peeled off from her in no time and she was left just with her underwear on, her bra had joined the pile on the floor.
Her moan filled the room as he sucked her nipple, playing with her breasts as if they were his personal toy. He moved lower and lower, and suddenly Soojung gained her mind back when his tongue touched the surface of her underwear.
“Minhyuk!”
She gripped his head hard, rising from the bed, her half clouded eyes met his fierce and angry ones.
“Why? You said you want to do it. What now? I’ll show you whether I will leave you or it will just make me wants you even more to the point I will just bind you to me forever!!”
He pinned her down again and kissed her mouth despite her struggle. His hand ran around touching every corner of her body, making her moan though wanted him to stop. She had changed her mind, she didn’t want them to do it in that situation. She didn’t want him to leave.
“Minhyuk-ah.”
She had called desperately and it halted his movement. She brought his head up and when they looked at each other’s eyes, she realized how her heart beat ran so fast and it was not the first time it had been like that since Minhyuk entered her life. She remembered the way he always looked at her, the feeling of being in his arms and how well she slept every time he was there beside her. She got it now, she couldn’t make him leave. She wouldn’t be able to escape.
She kissed him, putting all the feelings she was afraid to show in it.
“Make love to me, and don’t leave me.”
