hi! so sorry for the late reply >< (this is ddankkoma on a new acct) first of all thank you so much for reading! ;A; and i'm curious as to where exactly you saw this being recommended?
it's actually been a while since i wrote this so..hopefully i haven't forgotten too much about it. basically this fic deals with the idea of degeneration, mainly jongin, kyungsoo and, as a result, kaisoo. jongin's degeneration stems from the fact that he's been taking drugs (which is where our story begins). see, before this, the cycle was that kyungsoo would drug jongin and then take him along with him to the house where he would kill. jongin passes off his flashbacks of the crimes as nightmares and occasionally falls sick from the drugs, but that's about it. but because of the prolonged(?) use, jongin ends up walking to the house in a kind of drugged out/hallucinating state (which he dubs as 'sleepwalking') alone one day, which is when things go haywire.
questions about kris kyungsoo brings jongin with him every single time, so, jongin witnesses kris' murder. kyungsoo basically kills kris because, like chanyeol, he hadn't anticipated him being involved in their little midnight crime thing, and any kind of outsider involvement is a threat. kyungsoo believes that what he's doing is right (although he is kind of crazy, of course), but he knows that if anyone else were to discover what he's doing, he'd get caught. these are the two times kyungsoo goes against his 'purpose' and, as seen in the log at the end, they're the latest two killings. this kind of hints at the idea that kyungsoo isn't an anti-hero anymore and has embraced his complete 'killer' instincts.
(note: jongin has a nightmare about kris telling at him to put the knife down. switch kyungsoo and jongin's names around and you'll have the accurate dialogue of what /actually/ happened. jongin's drug-filled brain warps reality and blurs lines.)
questions about chanyeol's death the part about 'messing up the timing' with chanyeol is because kyungsoo hadn't anticipated jongin sleepwalking to the house as a result of the drugs. kyungsoo calls people when he finds jongin gone (but i'll let you decide if it's genuine concern), and, as explained in the fic, chanyeol goes to look for jongin. kyungsoo kind of freaks out a little when he realizes jongin might uncover something, and that chanyeol would end up getting in on it as well, so he slips out while the others are distracted and tracks down chanyeol, killing him just as chanyeol sees jongin reach the house. jongin sees this, which explains how he can remember details like chanyeol's expression and the blood.
questions about kai long story short, kai = kyungsoo. okok now you're probably even more confused, but let me explain. (this, again, is a result of the drugs.) all the stuff "kai" says to jongin in the mirror seen actually consists of words he has heard kyungsoo say in his deranged killer state, partnered with the pure evil he sees manifested in kyungsoo's crimes. "kai" is a kind of multifaceted subconscious of jongin's, that's been damaged because of kyungsoo. think of "kai" as a kind of radio: there's the killer kyungsoo station and the jongin warning station. "kai" flips back and forth between these stations, resulting in a kind of terrifying dialogue that jongin mistakes as him being the killer (mainly because he hallucinates "kai" to be himself). furthermore, because kyungsoo irl is so sweet and innocent, jongin denies the idea that it's kyungsoo in his flashbacks of the crimes and warps the killer into "kai", based off himself because, well, in a dark part of his mind, he believes he's more capable of killing than kyungsoo.
"No one knows that the last memory he had was spoken in a voice that didn’t belong to him." the last memory Jongin had was 'We killed Chanyeol, Jongin!". this flashback was brought about when he spoke to "kai", who, as I said earlier, he mistakes as himself. when "kai" says 'we', jongin assumes this means kai and himself, linking to the idea of the multiple personality issue. in actual fact, kai = kyungsoo, which means that the 'we' = kyungsoo + jongin. the 'voice that didn't belong to him' is kyungsoo's voice, which he realizes too late, of course.
