Portland renames 39th Ave to Cesar Chavez Boulevard

Jul 08, 2009 12:12

I'm going to start this by saying that yes Cesar Chavez did great things, and if you're into naming things after people as a memorial that's fine.  But I think that the city council's decision to rename 39th Ave is not the best way to do this, and the middle of an economic recession is not the best time for Portland's City Council to do this.

Right now the state of Oregon is facing an $800 million dollar budget deficit for the 2007-2009 budget, and the city is "balanced" it's own budget by cutting back funding to social services.  So what does the city council do?  They decide to spend between $250,000 to $750,000 to rename a street, and keep in mind these estimates come from the council and are subject to massive budgetary over runs like any other governmental project.

So I'd just like to say that at this point no matter what good or ill these council members do over the remnants of their terms I for one will not be voting for them. . .
