Request: Disabilty/helplessness fic

May 11, 2010 17:36

I just read this really disturbing fic where Jim has Blair's arms amputated to make him helpless and dependent, and am seriously skeeved.  (It's one of those f'd up "Guides are slaves" AUs, one that takes the trope to 11.  Not the author's fault--I was adequately warned and clicked anyway.  One day I will learn ( Read more... )

Try Arianna's The Quality of Silence. Blair is deafened, and learns to deal with it. He gets a lot of support from Jim and the others of Major Crime. Very long, with a happy ending. (Forgot to say - gen.)

Also, D.L. Witherspoon's Cave-In. Jim is left paraplegic after an accident. Medium-long, gen, good ending.

Thanks for the rec, StarWatcher. Alex, you might also enjoy my 'On Ice' series, not the first story, Shattered Dreams, so much but it leads into 'Guilt' where Blair is badly injured, then into Recovery, where he's pretty helpless physically for some of the story and has to learn to walk again, then 'On Ice', the fourth story also has Jim briefly 'disabled' in that he can't use his hands for a week and is dependent upon Blair. They are all in the series section on my page in Starfox's Mansion http://www.wolfpanther.com/arianna6.html .

Also, if you're interested in a blindness disability story, I have a slash one at www.arianna.hidden-muse.com called Drowning http://www.arianna.hidden-muse.com/viewstory.php?sid=5&warning=FRAO

Sandburg, Ellison and Adam is one of my faves by Annie. Blair is blind.

You'll find Without Words, by Natalie L on this site.

Em Brunson may have written a fic about Jim in a wheel chair, but it's not A Place Where No Shadows Fall. I just finished reading it, and it's the one where Jim is diagnosed HIV positive. Thanks, though, because I've been looking for this fic for a while, and I couldn't remember who wrote it. :)

Crap, sorry.
it's The Longest Walk , it's a WIP, and you can get it from her yahoo group if you join. Just click on the link "Emland" on her old site:

no recs, but JFC, talk about trauma inducing! My sincerest hope that one of the fics given to you does, in fact, cleanse the palette.

Ha--I almost gave the link in the post, because I knew someone would ask: http://www.squidge.org/~peja/cgi-bin/viewstory.php?sid=21116

To reiterate, nothing against neichan (the author), just in case she or any of her friends are reading this. I was Warned--and it's not like I haven't written some disturbing shit in my day. Part of my skeeved-ness might be that I'm finding an uncomfortable parallel with something I did in my own f'd up Guide Slavery AU WIP--my version is much, much, much more muted, but seeing the trope carried to its logical conclusion has given me the wiggins. (The uncomfortable parallel is only with the amputation aspect--I haven't gone anywhere near the hermaphroditism angle (you'll know what I mean if you click the link), which may be why I can kind of shrug that part off, even though it's objectively at least as disturbing as the armlessness).
