I think I'm finally starting to get a feel for Homestuck fandom. Sorta ish kinda? At the very least, I'm starting to get a feel for my prefered ships - which is far more complicated than usual, and less a matter of names than the symbol between them! Off the top of my head, I ship Terezi <3< Vriska, Vriska <> John, John <3 Karkat, Karkat <> Kanya,

And in Homestuck, the quadrants mean that it's easier for me to get into ships than usual, because pairings don't always have to be <3. I absolutely love it.
Although I'm not sure if Grimdark!Rose and Rainbow-Drinker!Kanyawould hold each other back or just egg each other on?
There was one fic I read somewhere that was Kanaya <3 Rose and Kanaya <> Karkat, and it had Kanaya thinking that while she loved Rose very much, she would never ever consider her as moirail, pretty much for that reason. XD
although this then begs the question of why their species even has binary gender distinctions
This is a very very good question. My headcanon rules that all trolls have identical sexual organs, and gender is some kind of remnant of some older cultural practice, arbitrarily decided by the sex of their lusus. :P Because really, if any combination of genders can fill a pail, there is absolutely no biological reason for two sexes...
After the third fic in a row treated horns as some kind of troll eroginous zone...
That seems to be a very widespread fanon. I think I even saw something that dealt with that in context with Equius' broken horn... But that was kind of disturbing. >_< (I have no idea where the idea even comes from. Horned animals on Earth have nerves in them, sure, but not to that degree!)

Is it too much to hope that you have a link? I'm definitly on the lookout for recs. I'm still up to my eyeballs in the giant chaos that's Homestuck fandom. I'm working my way through your A03 bookmarks, among other things, but it's a bit overwhealming and there's just so much fic out there!
I really like the idea of troll gender as an assumed concept, oh my goodness. Think of all the fascinating things you could do with that, especially if you start from the assumption that they assume the gender of their lusus. For starters, lususes (lusi?) come in such great variety, I'm having a hard time believing that every single lusus out there conforms to binary gender distinctions!
Iiiiii think people must be trying to make troll!sex more "alien", and since horns are the obvious canonical thing that trolls have and we don't, making them an eroginous zone is the easiest way to go? Maybe? Anyhow, I am emphatically not requesting a link for the fic about Equius' horn. *laughs* In one of my friend's Human Sexuality classes they discussed at cringe-worthy length the fact that you can, in fact, break a human penis. Just... break it. The second hand re-cap I got of that lecture was MORE THAN ENOUGH. I don't need the troll version!

I don't know about sexual chemistry - to be honest, I'm really bad at spotting UST - but I really like the chemistry that happens between archenemies who obsess about each other. Being each other's Most Important Enemy, so to speak. To use Sherlock again, that would be Sherlock <3< Moriarty. Or, say, Doctor <3< Master. I really don't like seeing that obsession turn into love, but I like it acknowledged that it is a very strong emotional connection, and the concept of kismesis fits so well, even though the sex part is hit-or-miss with me.
Is it too much to hope that you have a link?
Sadly, no. It wasn't a fic that I favorited, and I can't remember the title. Sorry. ^^; There is, indeed, a lot of fic out there!
There are definitely interesting things that could be done with troll gender! Perhaps secondary gender characteristics (because adult trolls clearly have binary gender body shapes) happen because of childhood diet? Which in turn depends on what the lusus feeds them, so... That would even explain why the Signless turned out male - the Dolorosa might not have had any idea what she was doing.

Yes! See this is precisly the kind of problem that normally requires a threesome to solve, but the quadrants are so much more tidy. Have you read - ah, crud, where's that link... right, Indecorous? In the author's own words: "In which John learns to balance a kinky girlfriend, an asexual boyfriend, a ten-inch cock, his sister, the neighbours, his friends, and his blog. Some are more balanced than others." It's ace!Sherlock/John/Mary in a stable poly triad, basically. I adore it, but I'd also lovelovelove to read something like that re-imagined as Sherlock <> John <3 Mary!
Aahaha yes, okay, Doctor <3< Master; when you put it that way, suddenly kismesis makes more sense! Although seen through the light of quadrants, suddenly the dynamic in "Last of the Timelords" is completly different and yet somehow much more logical. And also now all I can picture is the Master as Eridan, all, "dammit doc wwe got the wworlds mother glubbin best blackrom here wwhyre you tryin to shovve us in the pale zone huh" because you KNOW the new series Doctor just wants to be the Master's moirail. *laughs*
Wrt to gender I'd be curious to know more about the transition from child-on-the-planet to adult-wageing-war in Alterian culture. Maybe the visible gender thing happens during that part? It wouldn't shock me if there was some kind of very real trial or transition at that point in their lives, given the whole pysical metaphorphisis and gladiator-style trial they have to undergo to get out of the brooding caverns.
Oh my goodness, the poor Dolorosa! I hadn't really thought much about the role she played until I read your "Treading Unknown Ground", but good grief, imagine having to learn child-rearing from scratch in a society with absolutly no prescedent for it! I think there's absolutly canonical justification for her having inadvertantly mucked up his gender. Certainly, I think she inadvertantly mucked up his sexuality, from the trollish point of view. Instead of having four quadrants like a normal person, he has a mother and his "transcends the quadrants" relationship with the Disciple. ~Unnatural~!

Bwaha, you made me picture the Master as Eridan. Why does that suddenly feel so apt? *is amused* I totally agree that Ten wanted to push the Master into the moirail zone, and the Master wanted nothing to do with it. Hee. They do have an epic blackrom, though, ever since the Third Doctor.
You know, I hadn't even thought of that, but the idea that there are trials for trolls to enter adult society makes so much sense. OMG there's so much fic potential in that.
And yeah, the Signless was definitely Troll Queer. :D
