NZ Rugby, Food, Bars, and schooling. Oh, and the total lack of internet.
SO! I've been running around like mad getting my internet. Turns out that it would cost me an arm and a leg to get the local telecom... interestingly named telecom, to come out and set me up with broadband in the dorms. The wireless is only in the dining hall, so i may have to set up camp in there a couple times a week... or i might talk with everyone in my hall, or just the floor, and talk them into going halvesies (35sies?) on a communal gigabit wireless router, so we all have access with out laptops. Theres rumbling that they may put wireless into the dorms, just because its so damn successful in the dining hall. if that happens, we can just kill the contract.
School: I've picked my classes, now i just gotta goto orientation on the fourth (all the american kids are celebrating hardcore that night) the classes i picked are:
Game studies
Errant Knights and Ravishing Madiens: appropriating the middle ages
Introduction to Logic.
Basically easy classes, but i should have fun at the same time. Hopefully i'll figure out the whole lab/lecutre thing but *shrugs*
Phones: GAH i hate phones. the one i have wont work here because i needed to unlock the damn thing back in the states. gonna see if i can get my parents to help out with that. in the meantime i'm looking at sim cards and the pay-as-you-go plans. 89 cents a bloody minute! fuck THAT! however texting is only 20 cents a text... a lot more reasonable, and i can go in for free texting between my provider if i want to.
Food: Holy crap. its so bland! the dining hall is different, as in you have a barcode that lets you get lunch or dinner (breakfast is free.) they give you some meat then you get to put on the sides.... once through the line. For those ruggers back home who wanted me to lose weight. there it is. All about the portion control.
Bars: Woo! the campus bar is maybe 30 meters away from my dorm, and its 5 bucks a pitcher. Which compared to Rotorua, is NUTS!! good beer there, and im going again tonight. its still hellishly cheaper just to buy my own, and the two closest places are maybe a 15 minute walk... if we're being lazy.
Rugby: had my first practice with the U21 side. A kickass bunch of guys, though they are looking for sponsorship for all their money woes. which i can understand, though money woes UMBC rugby has worked to a fuckin science! we played touch, which they play with a one hand tag anywhere on the body. good times. i talked with the guys and it seems they were hurting for props, so its a good deal, i may even make reserve bench.
