She groggily rubbed her eyes.

It had been such a boring day at school, filled with nothing but lectures about the wonders of math and history. Shizuka could feel her mind drift, and she could have sworn that she had been so close to sleeping in between lessons. As everyone began departing the classrooms to attend clubs and cram school, she remained in the room due to the clean-up schedule.

As the rest of the students helped Shizuka clean up the floors and desks, one by one they disappeared once their tasks were finished. Realizing her other duties outside of school, she pulled out a pen and a notepad of paper, intending to write a shopping list. She had doubts that Wataru himself could cook, and as his "mother", she needed to take care of him.

Shizuka remembered a tasty recipe she had just learned, and began writing down ingredients. With an eager smile perking against the corners of her mouth, she could just picture Wataru hesitantly drinking the soup she made, commenting how delicious with that shy smile of his... Another thought popped up into her head, making her wrinkle her nose in disgust. Hopefully Wataru wouldn't dare to use her ingredients (or even her cooking, for that matter) for a new violin varnish. It was a win or loss situation.

Potatoes, she wrote. As her mind began to drift, she yawned tiredly, rubbing her eyes again. Realizing that she was losing herself to sleep again, Shizuka shook her head. No. She shouldn't be sleeping at a time like this...

Shizuka blinked herself awake, but everything seemed hazy. The face of her desk seemed so comfortable at the moment, and she was forced to succumb to the temptation of resting her head on it. So she gave in.

It also seemed like a good idea to close her eyes, just for a little moment. It's not sleeping, I'm only resting my eyes, Shizuka told herself. She wasn't going to sleep, it was only a momentary rest.

The room, bathed in the afternoon sun, began to feel distant, and the ticking of the clock seemed like miles away. Shizuka sighed softly, and before she knew it -

"Hey, hey!"

At the sound of the voice, Shizuka's eyes opened slightly, and in just a few seconds, the realization of where she was and what she was doing suddenly reached her mind. She immediately sat erect, quickly rubbing her face.

In front of her, there was a boy in a school uniform, appearing around the age of herself, perhaps a little younger. His school uniform was a sailor cut, and it appeared as if he was from a different school. He had a friendly smile perched on his face, in amusement that he had caught Shizuka sleeping. The girl immediately blushed in embarrassment and looked down at her desk.

"Hey, hey!" the boy said again, still grinning, and kneeled down in front of her desk. "You finally woke up."

Shizuka blinked. She had no idea who this strangely optimistic boy was - did he even go to this school? Judging by the uniform, Shizuka was convinced that he wasn't... but why was he even here?

At her thoughtful silence, the smile started to vanish from his face. "Are you okay?" he asked slowly, a little concern coloring his tone.

She had forgotten that he was talking to her. Shizuka responded with a quick nod. "Yeah," she answered, and finally let out a nervous giggle. "Sorry about that."

The boy's cheerful smile returned, and Shizuka couldn't help but return it; it was somewhat contagious. The boy leapt to his feet and waltzed in a slow pace, eyes shining innocently. There was something a little mysterious about him, something she couldn't describe, but a simple interrogation could clear it up. However, before Shizuka could open her mouth and question the identity of the boy, he was the one who asked the first question instead.

"You're the mama of that man, right?"

Shizuka stared at him blankly. "What man?" she pressed.

The boy took a step closer to the front of her desk and pressed his hands upon it. "That man," he repeated, voice low, despite the curious smile on his face. "Kurenai Wataru."

It was no secret that Shizuka had publically declared that she was Wataru's "mother", even if it had been an accident and only as a confrontation between Megumi and herself. However, if the boy was bringing up Wataru as a subject, that could only mean...

"Why?" Shizuka cried, without even confirming the question. "Did something happen? What's wrong? Did he get picked on again?" Possibilities of Wataru in certain dangerous situations raced in her mind. Who knew what a sticky mess that someone so defenseless like Wataru could be in! "Is there a woman deceiving him? I need to go! I need to help him!" She was about to stand up, but the boy firmly planted his hands on her shoulders, forcing her back into her chair.

"He's okay," replied the boy calmly. "He's home, safe and sound... but... as his mama, you should still go tend to him. Right?" He grinned.

"Of course..." was all the girl could say. Thoughts of Wataru in danger still troubled her heart, although the storm was calm. As Shizuka felt the pace of her pulse lower, another thought came up in her mind. Her eyes met with the boy's, and almost like magic, she knew that there was an eerie aura around him.

"Who are you?" she asked, with a little hesitation. She eyed his uniform carefully. "You don't seem to be around from here... I..."

The boy shrugged. "Who knows?"

That was not the answer she was expecting, and that one question multiplied when the boy fell silent. "How do you know about Wataru and me?" Shizuka demanded. "Did you bring Wataru home?"

No answer. As the boy walked around the room, childish eyes exploring the class facility, Shizuka frowned. With what the boy knew, he seemed suspicious. Had he been stalking Wataru? Was he a troublemaker or part of a gang? Maybe that was why he was here - he probably was a truant and didn't go to his own school!

Shizuka stood up threateningly and glared at the boy. "You'd best leave Wataru alone! If he gets hurt, you'll be sorry!"

"Hey, hey, don't get mad," the boy said soothingly, tilting his head to the side. "I'm not going to do anything to him. I promise, Mama."

Shizuka folded her arms uncomfortably, somewhat irritated at the taunting title the boy had given her. The boy smiled at her, but his eyes looked a little sad when he noticed the shopping list Shizuka had been compiling. "Mama, huh?" he murmured to no one in particular. "To be a mother for someone without a mother..."

Turning to her with a bright, sunny expression, he laughed when he saw that Shizuka was looking the direct opposite. "Hey, hey, I didn't mean it as a bad thing," he said. "It's a nice thing, cute even."

With this misunderstanding aside, Shizuka felt that she couldn't be mad at this boy for long. Judging by his manners, he seemed like a little kid, with such childish innocence brimming that it was impossible to stay irate at his actions. Plus, he did tell her about Wataru...

"Hey, hey, you're really such a nice girl," the boy said gently. He gazed at the ceiling, almost dreamily. "How nice, a girl kind enough to care so much for someone... someone like you... I wish I could've been as lucky."

In response to his compliment, Shizuka could feel a small sheepishness building up inside of her, but his wistful expression seemed to hint at something else, something that had once made him complete, something he seemed to long for. "Huh? By 'lucky', what do you mean?"

The boy left her desk. "You ask a lot of questions," he commented, but Shizuka knew it wasn't intended to be caustic. He looked her encouragingly, and then laughed again. "Go see your 'son'," he gently ordered. "Good luck with him." He began to leave.

Just when he reached the door, Shizuka suddenly remembered her manners. "Excuse me!" she called out, causing him to halt at the doorway. The boy turned to her with a questioning stare.

"Um," Shizuka began tentatively, "thank you." The boy nodded in return, his smile confirming that there was no need to thank him.

Another question she had been wanting to ask him surfaced, and his attention was held long enough for her to remember to ask it.

Shizuka took a step forward, fingers unconsciously tracing her palms. "I wanted to ask you this... I've asked other questions, but I've hardly gotten an honest answer from you, so I want you to just tell me this. I hope you don't mind me asking, but..."

The boy waited, silently giving her permission to ask.

"What's your name?"

The boy only smiled at her mysteriously - a smile so mysterious that Shizuka was puzzled as to what emotion or feeling it conveyed; a smile that seemed to leave Shizuka speechless, captivated by such intrigue that it left her in a daze. Seconds later, he passed by the door and left without a word.

Shizuka hoped she hadn't hurt his feelings or annoyed him. She dashed out the door to apologize for asking, but she saw that no one was there. The halls were completely empty and the entire school was silent - not even so much of a sound of a footstep was to be heard. It was almost impossible to not be seen in the long hallways in such a short period of time. How did he...?

Huh? What was that...? In confusement, Shizuka wondered what happened.

She rubbed the back of her head. The boy had told her to go see Wataru, and it might have been a sign that Wataru needed her, but... was that boy an illusion? She suddenly recalled the touch of the boy's hands when he pressed her back into her chair, and that made her wonder...

The more she thought about it, the more complicated it seemed. Shizuka decided to think about this later - first things came first. She needed to see Wataru.
