#62 - Now You've Gone
"Hey, how many cups have you had?" moaned Megumi. "Too much caffeine is bad for you!"
Kengo acted as if he didn't hear her words as he swallowed another gulp. Better coffee than alcohol, he figured, and well, it wasn't like he was paying for it. Megumi was a popular model with a high income compared to his lack of success in the music industry, so extra cups of coffee wouldn't do too much damage on her bill. Plus, he didn't feel like doing anything but drinking coffee at the moment.
He lived for rock. Rock was the embodiment of his life, but once in a while, Kengo had other tastes than just rock. Mio-chan had appealed to him in a way so cute that he couldn't help but want to make her smile. He wanted to protect her, to make sure she was all right, and most of all, see her smile at him.
Their date turned into a dud, and Kengo had realized too late that he and Mio-chan weren't on the same wavelength. He didn't notice her discomfort until he saw her at the café, and the fact that she didn't tell him about it made him feel all the more guiltier.
Maybe something was wrong with him. Maybe his "rock" was too much for Mio-chan to handle. Maybe someone who could keep up with her pace, someone like Wataru, would be perfect for her. Kengo sighed, staring at his dim reflection in the little drops of coffee left in his cup.
To his left, Megumi exhaled sympathetically. For someone who had that eagerness of youth and a thrill of living life, she had never seen Kengo so dejected before. With the way Mio had acted, she felt a little sorry for Kengo and had bought coffee for him, not expecting him to down so much in one day. The poor, poor Kansai man was acting really depressed at the moment, but Megumi knew that in time, the caffeine would kick in and... well, it wouldn't be too good. It was a good thing Nago-kun wasn't around (probably still being chased by that Satsua girl from the blind date) because Kengo would probably be too hyper to have a little sense of how much Nago-kun could handle.
Kengo set the cup in front of Akira, the friendly café owner. "More, please," he asked politely. Akira gave a worried glance towards Megumi, who shook her head as a signal to stop giving him more refills. The man shrugged and turned around, replacing his pitcher under the counter.
"Hey," spoke up Megumi, tilting her head to the side to look up at Kengo's eyes.
"What?" he mumbled in reply, forgetting to hide the gloom in his voice.
"I was in love once, you know. And it really is a bad feeling when something doesn't work out between you and the person you like."
"Yeah..."
Megumi gave Kengo a friendly slap on the back, nearly causing him to fall face-first into his coffee cup. "Not enough spirit!" she reprimanded mockingly with cheer in her voice. "What happened to your rock? With such a sad face, you can't expect rock to... well, rock!"
Kengo slowly glanced up at her in a curious, Wataru-like fashion, and Megumi simply smiled. "It's okay," she said softly. "So what if it didn't work out? Nothing's hopeless. You'll find someone who'll like you."
Kengo nodded. "I... guess," he answered.
Megumi grabbed Kengo's shoulders. "Not enough spirit!"
The guitarist looked perplexed. "Wh-Whaddya want me to say?"
Megumi leveled her eyes with Kengo's in a determined stare, as if she were trying to hypnotize him with her eyes. "You will find someone who will like you."
"I will find... someone... who will... like me," Kengo repeated slowly, voice seemingly questioning the credibility of this statement.
The model gave his shoulders a hard shake. "Say it with heart!"
"I will find someone who will like me."
"Again!"
"I will find someone who will like me!"
"Can't hear you!" yelled Megumi. By now, she was practically making him dizzy by shaking him too much.
"I WILL FIND SOMEONE WHO WILL LIKE MEEEEEEEEE!!" The resounding echo of the ending of the sentence came out in a loud boom, leaving Kengo out of breath and with a special effervescing feeling bubbling in his chest.
Megumi released Kengo from her grasp in a pseudo-shove, wearing a satisfied smirk on her face. Kengo panted, clutching his chest with his hand, eyes open at his newfound confidence (either that or the caffeine was starting to seep in). He turned to face his friend, mouth open with no words coming out.
"Well?" asked Megumi, still smiling.
"This..." Kengo couldn't find the right words to describe the surging feeling. As soon as he regained control over his motor functions, he rushed over to Megumi's side, slinging an arm over her shoulder. "My confidence has been restored!" he crowed. "I can feel the rock again! Thank you!"
Megumi seemed happy with her work. "See, you just need the right push to get things going again." And, I suppose, the right amount of coffee, she added to herself.
"I know what I'll do!" Kengo was already bubbling with ideas.
"What?" Megumi asked, curious. Someone like him would probably write a song about what happened, she guessed.
"I'll hold another blind date! I'll be sure to find someone to love again!"
Megumi's smile dropped, and she shook her head in reaction to Kengo's idea. "No, no, no," she hissed, immediately in discord. "You do not want to do that again. That's a very bad idea. A very bad idea."
Once again, Kengo ignored her advice. "What can go wrong?"
"Oh, lots of things. I mean-"
"You don't have enough confidence! Come on, you can come too!"
Well, lacking confidence was what "Wataru" told her, but Megumi knew it wasn't that. Kengo was too stupid to see the error of his mistakes. "Ken-Kengo-kun-" she huffed, trying to reel him back into reality.
Kengo threw out his arms as if to embrace the world, oblivious to Megumi's protests. "Wait for me! I'll be there!" he called out to no one in particular. Within seconds, he swooped out of the doors, with Megumi hot on his trail, yelling variations of begging him to stop.
Akira stared as silence refilled the café as the doors swung shut. He shrugged again, and took away the two's cups to clean.
