"Aoi sora ga mienu nara aoi kasa hirogete."
- Utada Hikaru,
'Colours'

Nono Nanami held the soft toy dolphin close to her chest, wrapping her arms around its soft fur and burying her face in it. She could still remember the day Kouta had won it for her, his expression of serious dedication standing before the most ridiculous of brightly coloured machines as children pushed past them, eager to find the arcade's most expensive machines with which to waste their money.

She smiled at the memory. Things had been easier then, before they'd accepted the weight of their current responsibilities; they had been equal, each one a member of the same team with the same needs and concerns. Slowly though, Yousuke had begun to change. At first she had dismissed it as being the overbearing influence of Mugensai-sensei and his rigid belief that Yousuke should make more of himself, but the arrival of Ikkou and Isshu - especially Ikkou - had compounded that unspoken belief,
driving Yousuke onwards to a state of mind where the carefree attitudes of the past were no longer of concern. And maybe she had no right to hang onto that carefree past, maybe she should accept the director and Ikkou, both Yousuke's seniors, as knowing better.but she couldn't. Part of her believed in the past, in the days when she had skipped class with Yousuke and Kouta and they had sat around the forest grounds, idly wasting time and sharing persimmon fruit.

They had all learnt about the previous Hurricanger-tachi of the 1790s, day in, day out they had studied history and tactics, not only of the Hayate Ryu but also the Ikazuchi, believing that one day such knowledge would prepare them for the eventual contests with the Ikazuchi shadow ninjas. That day had not happened, instead Jakanja had burnt the past away, destroying not only the past of the great and esteemed schools but her own jealously guarded youth.

Raiina had compounded the matter, stealing Yousuke further along the path of adulthood than even Ikkou or Mugensai-sensei could have taken him. Nanami pushed her face closer into the soft-toy, closing her eyes to the tears and trying not to listen to the heavy beat of her heart. Next to Raiina, her candle had flickered and waned. She felt defeated and resentful, not just of Raiina but of her fate. If it hadn't been Mugensai-sensei and Ikkou, if it hadn't been for Raiina then maybe, maybe, she would have found the time to tell Yousuke how she really felt.

But how could she? How could she dare talk to him now, seeing him so consumed by responsibility and the need to prove himself a strong leader? How could she strip away the legendary armour and restore the boy she had found herself falling love with?

Falling in love...

She choked back the words, unable to fully believe them. How could she be so selfish? How could she ask that of him.and how could she ever confess such a thing knowing how strongly Kouta felt about her?

She remembered that first time the three of them had met, when she had stumbled on the rocks and twisted her ankle, failing to pass the test that should have allowed her to progress to the next grade. If it not been for both Kouta and Yousuke reaching out and helping her to the temple then she would have been left where she had fallen till the instructor realised her absence and came looking for her. It was they, still strangers to her then, who had interceded on her behalf, despite the rivalry between the three sides of the Hayate School. Later that night, her ankle bandaged, she had sneaked out with Kouta to the nearest town. It was there that he had won her the dolphin toy.and there that he had first expressed an interest in her.

Their first kiss was awkward and brief, a rushed push of damp lips on the path back up to the temple as he helped her hobble along the wooden bridges and steep paths. She hadn't intended to kiss him but when he leant in close she felt as if she couldn't say no, especially not after how much he had done for her.

They said nothing of what had happened between them, not to each other and especially not to Yousuke, but whilst he never spoke of the event she could see that his eyes told a different story. He was waiting for her to come to him.and she never had. Perhaps he was still waiting, she reflected, perhaps even now, as Raiina and Ikkou and Mugensai-sensei made their demands on Yousuke and Isshu inferred almost-interest - perhaps after all that Kouta was still waiting for her to say something, to tell him about how she felt.

But she couldn't. To be honest with him would be to hurt him and he had done so much, now even more than that first charitable meeting. Now she not only owed him for her rescue from inconvenience and the pain of a sprained ankle, but she owed him her life. Without Kouta she would have fallen in battle a long time ago. He was the rock upon which they depended, the one who grounded them when the fuse of Yousuke's temper burnt short and her own doubt threatened to consume her. She owed
Kouta so much.but not her heart.

She struggled with the wait of her feelings, trying to find a way out of the maze of emotion and the fractures that now marked their friendship. She wanted to tell Yousuke.but she couldn't do that without hurting Kouta.

Her fists tightened in impotent rage and slammed them into the sofa at her side, the dolphin toy falling from her lap. She looked up sharply, her nostrils suddenly flared with the smell of coffee.

Standing before her was the shape of Shurikenger, his mask expressionless and unreadable and two steaming mugs of coffee in his gloved hands. He nodded to her, the closest he could get to a knowing smile.

"I thought you might need a drink, dolphin girl." He said softly.

Quickly she tried to gather herself together, wiping the tears away with the back of her hand and gratefully accepting the coffee made in one of Oboro's tasteless mugs decorated with the word 'coffee' in a variety of languages on the side.
The mug was warm in her palms and she blew the steam away, thankful for something to concentrate on instead of having to look up at Shurikenger.

"Everything okay with you?" He ventured, his words inflected with a slight accent and the almost English of someone who had grown up on a naval base, close to natural English speakers.

"Yes." She answered quietly. "Everything's fine. Thank you."

"You sure?" He asked, pressing the matter.

She looked up and with sudden honesty replied: "No. But I think I'll survive."

He nodded his understanding. "It's difficult..." He said and his head turned momentarily towards Oboro's vacant desk, the various logos of the three separate sides of the Hayate School scrolling across her monitor in an animated screensaver. "Being so close to someone and not being able to say how you feel."

She blushed but didn't say anything. He turned his mask back to her and she wondered what colour eyes might once have looked out from behind the black star-shaped visor.

"You're stronger than me, dolphin girl." He said, no small amount of pride in his tone. "Me? I would have let my emotions get in the way.I would have run away from it." He paused and she turned away, studying her coffee intently. "I wish I'd been more like you."

The tears formed at the corner of her eyes once more but she said nothing. He reached out and ruffled her hair with his gloved hand and turned away. "We could all do with being a bit more like you, I think." He said as he opened the door with his free hand. "Perhaps if Raiina-sama had been more like you she might have got what she wanted."

Nanami looked sharply up but Shurikenger's mask remained unreadable. He shrugged and stood in the doorway for a moment.

"Perhaps it doesn't pay to be so carefree and childish all the time, huh?" He said and quickly departed, pulling the door closed behind him before she could answer.

She sat there for a moment with the coffee in her lap and the abandoned dolphin toy on the hard, wooden floor and then slowly she stood up. Shurikenger was right. The past was important.but the strength that came from remaining and controlling your emotions, even though it might break your heart, was more important.

She was a member of Hayate Ryu's legendary warrior team and such had a responsibility to both her friends and the people around her, the people who would never know her name or her face or indeed how in debt they were to her. The tears stopped, frozen at the corners of her eyes, and whilst her heart still beat with the need to be close she would bury those feelings until such time that peace had returned.

For now she was Hurricane Blue, the armour more than the girl. But the heart remained the same and one day she would be forced to come to terms with that. Until now she would do the best she could to protect those she cared for.those she loved. Gingerly she reached down and sipped the hot coffee and smiled. Who would have thought that a man wearing gloves could make such good coffee?

In the rocky corridor outside she heard voices and laughter, the sound of Kouta and Yousuke joking around as they approached the office. She smiled and ran to meet them, almost throwing coffee over her recently washed jacket.

These days, with all their contradictions and responsibilities, were the best days of her life and these friends, with all their complications, were the best friends she had ever had. Beaming wide she ran out into the hallway.
