The artificial lights within the buffet carriage were dim and comforting, the shutters drawn on the outside windows, obscuring the endless daylight and discoloured auroras that now filled the Earth's atmosphere twenty-four hours a day and forced an artificial cycle of slumber upon the varied residents of the great train.

Upon her first foray into the past, Hana had been startled by what the text books of her youth had termed 'actual night'. The concept of a period of time in which a great blanket of starlight and shadow fell over the planet still unnerved her, the idea being so very removed from the life she had lived in the cradle of a thoroughly alien era.

The door slid softly shut behind her and she turned her scowl from the closed shutters that hid the skies to the young woman in the Den Liner staff uniform behind the counter to her right, her eyes shut firmly and her lips twitching at the corners in the kind of curious smile often only affected by the slumbering or the stupid. Her gloved hands, wrists and forearms covered by a multitude of wristwatches, each one from a different period and each one telling a different time, led Hana to believe that she was of the former category...though she wasn't entirely convinced the girl could be quite disbarred from the second.

With a heavy sigh she sat down on the stall facing the other woman, whose dark eyes opened the instant Hana's rear pushed against the smooth synthetic leather of the stool.

"Good evening, Hana-san. Would you care for tea or coffee or perhaps an alternative selection from the current menu displayed beneath you." The uniformed woman recited, her head still propped up by her hands.

The counter beneath Hana blinked into life as the fluorescent bulbs behind the glass awoke, triggered by the keywords in the other woman's speech, and the Den Liner logo on the backlit datapads beneath the glass surface faded into a list of both hot and cold beverages.

"Ah...moloko/tea...please." Hana said uncertainly.

"Would that be melatonin plus/moloko or moloko/standard grade?" The woman behind the counter smiled, still unmoving.

Hana glanced at the hidden window.

"What's the difference?" She asked uncertainly.

"Melatonin plus/moloko will help you sleep better." The other answered instantly.

"I don't want to sleep." Hana answered in a dejected manner, turning her head to face the hidden glass once more. "Naomi-san...don't you ever want to open the blinds at moments like this?"

"That would be against Den Liner's policy." The other woman replied, her smile remaining a constant.

Hana nodded with dissatisfaction, turned away from the disguised windows and looked down at the china cup and saucer filled with golden brown tea and an iceberg of cream peppered by flecks of brown sugar, which had miraculously appeared before her.

Behind the counter Naomi's position, her attentive eyes and relaxed smile gave no indication that she had moved.

Hana bowed her head slightly.

"Thank you for the tea." She remarked awkwardly and placed her hands around the warm curve of the cup and lifting it gently up towards her.

"Perhaps you're not active enough." Naomi remarked suddenly, the smile curling deviously at the corners of her lips.

"I'm sorry?" Hana said with confusion, bringing the cup away from her lips and placing it down.

Naomi giggled and reached out, brushing a smudge of cream and sugar from the other girl's nose with her gloved hand.

"Perhaps you're not active enough during the daytime, hence why you're restless at night." The uniformed woman suggested.

Hana sighed angrily and clenched her fists. At the gesture, Naomi became suddenly animated, jumping up and down and making tiny, flailing punches in the air.

"I'm restless," remarked Hana, ignoring the other girl's excited actions. "Because I don't know where we're going or even when; the owner keeps making speeches about adjusting the balance and addressing the issue of Imajin but we never seem to go anywhere and we never seem to fight any Imajin!"

Naomi dropped her fists and held a single finger beneath her chin, her head tilting to one side as she affected an expression of deep concentration.

"Perhaps you should stop concerning yourself with Imajin and concentrate on people instead." She suggested.

"I hate Imajin." Hana rankled as if to further emphasise the other girl's point, her hands balled in impotent fists.

Naomi nodded in a knowing fashion, pouting her lips out and assuming an expression of thoughtfulness.

"And what about people, do you hate them too?" She asked.

Hana glowered at the other girl.

"No, I don't hate other people." She sighed after a moment.

"And girls?" Naomi prompted.

"I don't hate girls." Hana responded wearily.

"And Naomi?" The uniformed woman pressed further, the mischievous smile once more tugging at the corners of her lips.

"I don't hate Naomi-san." Hana answered automatically.

Naomi nodded and considered the results.

"So...what you're saying is that you hate Imajin, but you like people. Your favourite kind of people are girls and your favourite girl is me!"

She jumped up and down in an excited manner and beamed at the seated girl on the other side of the bar, her fringe falling a little too far over eyes that had been outlined by a heavy charcoal pencil.

"I...don't think I said that." She frowned with confusion.

She opened her mouth to protest and with a sudden movement that caught her completely off-guard, the Den Liner staff member launched herself forwards, slamming her hands down on the counter and pushing her lips hard against Hana's.

Hana remained frozen with shock, her hands still clenched in fists at her side as the other girl's lips pushed against hers, their tongues meeting and her resolve crumbling completely against such a practised foe.

Her eyes closed despite her better judgement and she surrendered, a tremble of awakening emotion stirring inside of her as her heart began to hastily quicken its beat.

After a short time, Naomi pulled quietly away, leaving Hana's lips to gently make shapes in the empty air before the saddening realisation of the other girl's absence forced her to open her eyes.

From behind the counter Naomi smiled in a manner that suggested she was pleased with herself.

"W-what was that?" Hana asked, her lips still trembling.

Naomi's smile widened.

"A wake up call." She beamed.

Slowly, Hana reached up with her bare fingers and brushed her lips and, ever so slowly, she smiled.

"Thank you." She whispered in reply.
