Every time Kaidou said that he was going to live with the Orphenochs, Yuka would shyly smile and know that he would end up returning.
Every time Kaidou said he hated both Yuka and Kiba, Yuka would mention that he never tells the truth if it makes him feel vulnerable.
He couldn't understand why Yuka and Kiba understood him and his habits more than anyone else did. That's what made him say that he hated them so much -- all of them have known each other less than Kaidou has known a lot of people in his lifetime, and yet they were able to tell. He was living with them too much, and they were starting to grow under his skin.
Whatever the case was, Yuka would always know if he was lying or not.
All of this was for the fairytale-like dream that Kiba had. Often times, Kaidou kept saying it was dumb, impossible to accomplish, childish, and naive, yet he ended up helping out and carrying out Kiba's wishes. Deep inside, he secretly believed that maybe it would come true. Just maybe.
Kaidou always denied the truth, and he knew it too. Even though he said he hated living with Yuka, he actually didn't mind. Even though he said he was going to live with the Orphenochs, he wouldn't actually go. Even though he said he hated Yuka, he realized later on that he had feelings for her.
Even though he knew Yuka reciprocated his feelings, he wouldn't dare tell her anything about him liking her. It was just too embarrassing to have a rough guy like him going soft on a beautiful girl like her. He tried his best to suppress his emotions so no one would be able to tell.
Kaidou thought maybe he would say something in the future. Just maybe. Maybe when Kiba's fairytale dream was accomplished, then maybe he would confess.
Unfortunately, on that fateful day when the trio decided to aid the freedom fighters by stealing the Emperor's Belt, the dream became a nightmare.
He did not expect that Murakami would know Kiba's plans.
He did not expect the monster to fire arrows at him.
He did not expect Yuka would take the blow for him, and then get mercilessly stabbed by the beetle's horn.
The nightmare all happened in a flash, and before he knew it, he saw the fragile frame of the Crane Orphenoch transform into Yuka again. Her feathers, pure as snow white, followed, gently raining against the hard floor that was now becoming her grave.
Kaidou quickly transformed back, and hurried towards her. As he lifted up her frail body, he could see that Yuka's face was heavily injured. Little clumps of feathery white covered half of her oval-shaped face, with one eye as pallid as snow white. Her dimming and clouding eyes were what he feared the most, and as her breath came out in erratic gasps, he could feel himself about to fall apart.
"I haven't told you anything yet!" he blurted out, tears starting to form in his eyes. No, him, Kaidou Naoya, would never cry over something like this. Kaidou Naoya never cried. He knew at the fact that he was weeping, something would be terribly wrong, and it was.
Kaidou pulled himself together, and quickly murmured, "I love you."
He noticed that Yuka's tired eyes slightly widened at this, but he continued. "I've always felt that way about you... I love you..."
Yuka did not stir and did not do anything else, but a faint smile crept onto her face. It was the same smile that he had always ignored up until now, where the crucial event was going to happen, and Kaidou had no power vested in him to prevent it, no matter what. Softly stretching her arm out, Yuka whispered, "Stupid... I've known that long ago..."
As he mourned over his dying, nearly-sleeping beauty, he felt her weak hand gingerly caressing his face, fingers sliding across his cheek. Her energy finally left her, and her hand dropped to her side.
The world went dark before he knew it, and as he stared in the lifeless eyes of Osada Yuka, he knew that the end finally came.
This wasn't supposed to happen. It just wasn't. Kaidou felt himself about to burst from too many emotions boiling inside of him, and they bubbled out at last.
He screamed without words, and transformed back into the Snake Orphenoch. He charged towards the monster with all that he could, but the monster opened his mouth and caught Kaidou between his sharp teeth. The teeth pierced through the hard, scaly armor of an Orphenoch, dripping with intense pain. Before he knew it, the monster was swinging him this way and that. As Kaidou screeched with pain as the set of thorns clenched his back in a taut, doomed embrace, he saw through his blurred vision the figure of a Snow White, whose life had gone before she was supposed to live a happy life.
The beast finally opened its mouth again, ready to swallow its prey. The weakened Kaidou raised his hand and tried to reach for Yuka, but eternal darkness enclosed him, leading him to his tomb.
