Dia de Los Muertos - Olvera Street - Downtown Los Angeles
Nov 01, 2009 13:02
today is All Saint's Day, tomorrow is All Soul's Day. As everyone probably knows the two constitute Dia de Los Muertos. i went to the annual exhibit of alters at the Pico House in downtown Los Angeles, next to Olvera Street.
i'm such a tourist in my own hometown.
Pico House (the first grand hotel in Los Angeles built by the last Mexican governor, Pio Pico.)
traditional!
a BIG alter for Pio Pico himself.
another typical alter. things people need for their journey and destination, and things people remember about that person.
more modern representations.
beautiful textiles. very intricate.
one of the most intricate!
the above textile with an explanation of Dia de Los Muertos.
another large alter.
this year's exhibit.
made from recycled materials!
the gallery space.
paintings, photos, pop culture and mixed media.
skulls everywhere you can fit them!
Olvera Street bandstand area.
note the skeletons hanging around.
kids partaking.
building an alter.
BOO!
just a sampling. thanks for looking! p.s. some photos look pretty grainy. i left my camera on a weird setting but i think they still "work". :)
