Part 2.
The bright sound of a violin thrummed through the air as a large group of people milled about the venue on a cloudy afternoon. Though voices threaded through here and there, Michiru closed her eyes as she played and focused only on the music that seemed to churn up from inside her.
A lilting piano accompanied her as the happy couple began to dance directly in front of the stage, the bride's veil long and beautiful. The handsome groom laughed as he swung his new wife within arm's reach, the crowd laughing in surprised unison at this show of affection.
She closed her eyes and stilled moments later as the crescendo of their musical duet faded into the briefest of silences before the crowd erupted into claps and cheers.
She and her companion locked arms and, her violin tucked tightly in her other hand, they bowed to their audience, the cheers and claps like a rising crescendo that warmed her heart even in the stuffy convention hall.
Despite the sweat at the back of her neck and her burning fingers, she smiled out at everyone, ecstatic.
"Good job, Michiru. We're getting better and better."
She dropped her pianist's arm from hers as they left the stage, the boisterous laughter and conversations fading away in their little world beyond the curtains.
Hana grinned, her summer dress the exact color of sunshine. "It's too bad I'm leaving at the end of the summer but I just can't pass up this job opportunity. I think it will open a lot of doors for me."
Michiru nodded before turning away to place her violin snugly in its case, grateful for the distraction. Hana was one of the best piano players in the district. Who would she be able to find to replace her?
"I know I've told you dozens of times already but I'll miss you, Hana. No one else plays as good as you."
Hana laughed as she reached up to undo the tight bun at the nape of her neck, shaking her hair free. Dressing up so fancily was probably one of her least favorite things about this job, and Michiru knew it.
"I actually have a list of contenders." She brought up one hand to her face in a V-for-Victory gesture. "It's not too early to start looking for my replacement, you know. In fact, I have a friend that came to hear us play. Let me go get her and I'll introduce you."
She felt tight fingers clench her heart. No, she wasn't ready to think about the end of the summer and her friend's departure. Not yet.
The convention hall they were in was close to downtown. As Hana fingered her hair back into place before stepping out the door, Michiru heard the distinct toll of a clock through the nearest window. Everything stopped, frozen in time, the light sweat still at the back of her neck suddenly turning ice cold.
"Hana, I'm so sorry! But I have something to do. I have to go. I'll meet your friend another time, okay?"
Hana paused in the doorway, her mouth agape for a second. Michiru grabbed her violin case and rushed past her through the doorway, doing a half-twirl so she could smile and wave at he friend. "I'll see you next time!"
"Okay! Bye, Michiru!"
Distracted, she rushed through the nearest doorway, brushing against a short-haired, sandy-blonde girl wearing a suit and tie. The girl looked at her, her eyes a deep blue, like the dark ocean beneath a sunny sky.
Michiru turned away and rushed through the door, the deep chimes from the nearest clock tower finally drifting into silence.
She wanted to meet Hana's friend and start the search for her new accompaniment on the piano, but first she had an art exhibit to prepare for.
