Apparently, the purpose of my life is to provide fodder for interesting LiveJournal posts.
Today was Truck Day. Thanks to
sketchington, we had a truck all day to get the large items out of my house. Along with
sassysesame, he brought
negaduck9; also appearing were
explodingalice,
bleepmicro,
sin8,
imrygels_ho,
libcrb,
chaoticneutral and Michael (sorry I don't know your LJ id!). Thanks to their tireless efforts, the contents of my house are almost entirely in the storage facility or at Harper's. Along the way, I bumped Xtina's car with the U-Haul, we dropped the TV outside Public Storage (it didn't break visibly, but we'll know for sure when Laurie and I retrieve it)...
...and, to top off this day, after I arrived at Harper's, I noticed that the level of smoke from the oil leak in my engine was not dissipating as usual when I turned the car off. Realizing something was wrong, I opened the hood, only to discover that my engine was on fire. I rushed into the house to see if they had a fire extinguisher, but theirs was empty. By the time the fire department arrived (and they got there quickly), the front of the car was totally engulfed in flames. Luckily, the fire didn't reach past the engine, so no explosion to see on the 11 o'clock news; and the stuff I was carrying, including my clothes, and some of Laurie's family photos, appears all right (I'll check all that for smoke damage later). So my car is destroyed. I'll call my insurance agent on Monday, but I'm pretty sure I only had collision coverage.
As a result, I probably won't be able to go see Laurie for New Year's. More immediately, I don't know how I'm going to go to the storage facility to return their cart key (and get my license back!), to the U-Haul place to file the claim for the damage I did to Xtina's car, to the house to finish getting stuff out and cleaning the place so I can give Ed the keys back Sunday afternoon, or to work Sunday evening. Go me.
p.s. I'm sorry I didn't call any of you to tell you about the car thing, but my phone is so dead I can't even power it up to get numbers off it; I'll try to get my charger from the house (the one I put in my pocket isn't the right one).
p.p.s. Thanks for everyone's help today; it was the one truly bright spot in all of this.
