Tips: Dialogue
Sometimes, when I'm writing dialogue for Kanda, I keep feeling like there's something not quite right and he's acting a little out of character. It's not what he's saying, it's how he's saying it. And every time I think about what could be wrong, it's always the same thing:
Kanda is dialoguing.
Kanda does not dialogue. He does not converse. He orders, insults, and makes the occasional terse comment. When he's trying to be nice-ish, it's not that he's going to soften his words so much as he just won't say things to make you feel bad. Cuz Kanda, being not the brightest guy, likes to just do stuff and hope it works out. And if it doesn't work out, he'll just try doing it again with a slightly deeper scowl and see if that makes a difference. (See: Skin Bolic, Alma Karma)
I love Kanda to pieces. I love all perpetually grumpy characters to pieces, but I especially love him because he makes me work at dialogue because I tend to write characters that ramble awkwardly (Lavi) and so writing short dialogue? Really weird for me. I actually have to go back and revise his dialogue.
So if you didn't get the implication, I'm writing a fic. (And for some reason, Kanda/Lavi has become my OTP as far as writing goes. I actually ship Tyki/Lavi more because it's wicked fun, but I'm afraid of what Tyki will do to me if I accidentally make him OOC, so I don't write them as of yet. It's the fear.)
This fic all started because I discovered dgm_kink . I've heard rumors of such a place, but only a few days ago did I seek it out. There are some seriously hilarious and disturbing prompts on there. (Golem sex. lmao) It's really a fun place, go check it out if you haven't already. I'm slowly working my way through all the comments and once I finish I may make a post with links to all of my favorite posts.
Sadly, it seems like it's pretty dead as of late. Which is a shame because all those fanfics that I want to read and don't want to write because I suck at writing sex? I was totally going to start posting the prompts for them. Alas.
But at least one got me writing and I'm having lots of fun with it. When I finish it, I'll post it. It'll be long-ish, but probably still one-shot length, maybe pushing two-shot.
