Overcast today, but not likely to burn off - it's a very high cloudiness that tends to hang around for awhile. Jets are flying under it, so it's not our typical marine layer that comes in off the ocean around sunset, and clears by noon the next day. We were going to go down to the beach to fly kites some time this weekend, but obviously not today. In contrast to our usual on-at-10am, off-when-the-sun-goes-down stiff breeze, there is very little wind today.
I've noticed driving home from work lately that kite surfing seems to be proliferating. Last summer I only saw one or two. Now they occur in clusters. I'm beginning to wonder if you have to belong to some kind of club - there is never just one. At the north end of Bolsa Chica State Beach, I often see 6 or 8 at once. The colorful u-shaped kites hang in the air, slowly turning and moving, belying the breakneck pace of their passengers below on the water. The kites remind me of jellyfish. Looks fun, but I don't think I have nearly the upper-body stength to try it.
So an Allen's hummer took possession of the feeder on the side of the house, and now there is a male Anna's coming to the feeder on the front porch. The Allen's has nearly emptied his so I boiled water and made up some more sugar syrup to refill the feeders. Now I'm just wating for it to cool. I need to go to the nursery and get more blooming plants so they're not completely dependent on feeders. At least we have enough bugs in our yard to keep birds happy, even if it looks like crap. There are black phoebes hanging out there all the time.
It was a busy week. Trying to get that report done for work when they moved the deadline up, garden club Monday night, the LJ meetup Tuesday, thinking we might get together with
newbad up at Disneyland Wednesday, finishing M.'s steelhead drawing Thursday (used Paint at work while I was waiting for S. to give me back corrections-bad me). Quiet Friday night at home - well as quite as it can be with these little monkeys climbing on everything. Doing their best to show off their primately arboareal heritage (GET DOWN FROM THERE!). I even took them for a walk before bed, thinking it would burn off some energy - no such luck. Angus was still getting out of bed at midnight.
Chatted with Beth a bit. Beth, at least log on an check out the cool Mel icon I made you. You don't have to write anything, honest. :)
Then a guy I've chatted with before popped up. He's a married guy with two kids and interesting to talk to, but I'm never sure if he's going to start trying to talk dirty to me. He started asking what do I look like and what am I wearing and saying he's being bad. I put him off by saying I liked Anne McCaffrey's description of herself - "My hair is silver, my eyes are green and I freckle. The rest is subject to change without notice." And that I was wearing a T-shirt, jeans, a holey bathrobe with stains on it, and wool socks. And I was about to put on a parka. He laughed (or LOLed), but I think one of these days I may have to cut him off.
Went to look for bunkbeds for the boys so Avalon can have her own crib, instead of the portable one. John put the side back on Angus' bed, and she has been having her naps in there when the boys are still awake. We're want to ge the kind that also has shelves and a desk underneath so they have a bit more storage spage, and someplace to study when the start school. John was quite digusted to find that Levitz is charging $700 for a set made of particle board.
I've felt slightly depressed all week - I don't really know why. John noticed this afternoon, and told me to order pizza for dinner. We do this usually the day after payday, but it's great I really don't feel like cooking anyway. I have no imagination when it comes to what we already have in the kitchen.
