So I hooked up the new-to-us monitor and it does look mighty fine. It's bigger though, so all the wallpapers I was using look a bit grainy from being stretched more. Much easier on the eyes though...
Before that I took John over to his mom's in Long Beach to feed her animals (she's on an RV trip until the 8th) and pick up her car. On the way back by myself, the fog got very thick in Seal Beach, and I decided to turn down Main Street and drive down to the pier, then back to PCH. I lived in Seal Beach for a couple of years, and sometimes I miss it. It's the closest thing to a small town in in this part southern California. Several of my best friends in high school grew up there, and I was always slightly jealous.
I was chagrined to notice that one of our favorite restaurants there, Bayou St. John, a Cajun and Creole place, was now called Caroline's. I'm hoping they just changed their name. They had the best stuffed soft shell crab! Continuing down the street, I smiled that there are four Irish bars (I hesitate to call them pubs) within 2 blocks. Amateurs, my Celtic husband calls their patrons, quite often students from Long Beach State.
As I turned left at the pier all the fog reminded me of the book,
The Last Coin by James Blaylock, a fantasy that takes place in Seal Beach and parts of Long Beach. I'm pretty sure of the house the author had in mind where all the action took place, and I think there were even large squid washing up on the beach in that story, like they have here been lately. I kind of expected to see a sow, gingerly holding a silver spoon in her jaws, moving gravely and purposefully down the street.
When I got to Sunset Beach the fog had cleared, so I continued on home to get the monitor set up and write this entry.
