Someone turned on the tv in the breakroom during lunch, and following all the innawguration folderol, there was a story about several hundred Dosidicus gigas (Humboldt squid) beaching themselves in Newport Beach. This happened a few years ago in La Jolla and at Catalina Island. Seems a little early for them to be showing up here. We were given ( Read more... )

Any idea why they're beaching in such large numbers? Protesting the inauguration?

I'm not sure they really know - chasing fish, weird currents, turbidity from the recent storms?

I just know the news guy started talking about how they are such a big fishery here, and my co-worker VT starts yelling at the screen "Different species, idiots!" That's her forte, so I guess she's entitled.
