So, my mother-in-law bought us a complete crib set, plus some other things for the baby (way back in September) with a Winnie the Pooh theme. We hadn't even thought of a "theme" or anything for the baby at that point so I thanked her and put it away for awhile. A couple months later, Steve and I started a registry and found another bedding set

i don't know if you plan to paint the walls of the baby's room (or if you're allowed to since yer in an apt)... but you can choose a primary color like apple green or a buttery yellow for the walls or overall room. then choose another color like blue or red as the primary accent color. All four colors are found in both themes and will allow you to use elements from both without causing either to look out of place. Example: green walls with red gingham curtains; green rocking chair with red throw pillow or blanket...
Then you can switch out the bedding sets when one or the other is in the laundry...
You could get a basic sheet set in green or red that you can mix and match with both sets as well... Example: green sheet set could go with the blankets of either set...
Also- you can use the alternate bedding set for your travel crib/playpen if you get one of those thingies...
Other wall treatment ideas- if you aren't allowed to paint your walls- you could go to Lowe's or Home Depot and look at their selection of peelable wall accents... They look like wallpaper but they are self-adhesive and can be removed... You can get borders and shapes like dots...

Sure... It might look a teensy bit out of place if its the only pooh thing... I think your mother-in-law will be more than understanding if you explain to her that though you love and appreciate her gift, you both feel the Zanzibar set fits your personalities better. And rotating the bedding out will still allow you to get use out of the item...
Besides... Who's gonna stand over the crib and say, "That baby is ok but (s)he would look better on the whinnie the pooh set."
