So long time no see. I don't really have much energy these days, so fandom stuff and life in general kind of come to a stand still.

( I'll just throw my sort of fandom update under a cut, because this is too mixed anyway: Conan, me not watching anything new, Moebius )

Meitantei Conan's good stuff -- though I'm with you on not wanting to sit through 500+ episodes to get caught up. (Ditto for the manga.)

Miyazaki did Mirai Shounen Conan, so it's possible that's what Satou-san meant. Hard to say, though, since both tend to get referred to as "Conan". I'm betting he's meaning the newer one, though. (Come to think of it, he probably got started watching it when he was growing up -- it's been on for forever.)

Oh, I have been selective about the anime, only watching important arcs (mostly stuff having to do with the Black Organization and/or the FBI) and not so much random episodes. And any episode with Heiji. I like that somewhat clueless Osaka kid (not to mention he speaks Kansai-ben). (The manga, though, I can read at my own speed, so I can go through the chapters a bit faster.)

So there is actually something else out there with the name Conan. I've wondered. But yeah, hopefully he means the newer one. (I believe the anime has been on since 1996 and I don't see the ending in sight any time soon.)
