And here we are again: when I first heard about SB4 I was generally unimpressed and uninterested, but that might have been because of fact that first so called trailer was flames on textured background, some voiceover and logo. Now, I'm not tearing down walls here, but I am exited nevertheless! This brings back memories - this bring forth some of that crazy fangirlism I harbored for these games! It's like after bleak winter there is spring again, and I'm more than ready to buttonsmash my way through thousands and thousands enemies again! Of course there is still waiting ahead, but you know what I mean.
If I hadn't checked out who these new goobers are, I'd still be throwing guesses around; at first sight Katsuie did look like he could have something to do with Mouri (my guess was like... Terumoto maybe?), same with Yoshiteru who gave me a little Oda vibes at first. Not saying that any of my presumptions were any way better, I'm just dying to learn how Capcom crew has twisted history this time to set these three, Sakon included, to pedestal. Also I've nothing against Sakon or Katsuie, those guys look great, but to me they are less impressive 'fated rival'-pair than their predecessor, but it is pretty hard to top Mitsunari and Ieyasu from third game to begin with. I know, and knew, that waiting any female character to fill spot in poster rival pair will forever be too much to be expected, so I ain't disappointed. But I do hope we'd get some new female characters. Of course I'm waiting for Tsuruhime and Magoichi to return, maybe, but... I'd love to see something beyond "lovestuck girly girl" and "tough woman with mysterious past".
...I thought Masamunes head couldn't get any bigger, but I was wrong, and where on earth are you Yukimura? :( But with these delightful thoughts, I end this post. Will be interesting to see how many will find their way back in this community (or has everybody just switched to tumblr for good), and if 4th game spark interest to SB in new people, and maybe they find their way here! :)
Sengoku Basara is already big enough title that I'm afraid publishers just want to play it safe and cater their most numerous fan demographic, as well as most potential new fans, namely teenagers, with... blatantly pretty and appealing designs, and actual personality of characters aside.
Not saying that Katsuie and Sakon can't prove to be interesting and even strong personalities on their own, but I neither like the fact that when people see them for the first time, some are gonna think "oh, hey, he looks like Mouri/Yukimura/(insert existing character here)" instead of "wow, that new character looks good". It called first impression for reason, and Sengoku Basara as franchise really depends heavily on it's characters.
I mean, I can see the underlying reasons here. Games cost hefty money to make and it's financially safer to guarantee good game instead of aiming for great! game. When 'ugly' characters just don't top popularity polls they're easy to drop and replace in roster, and good chances are that people seemingly don't even care while flocking to admire new and shiny.
I think this is unfortunate because I love Sengoku Basara's aesthetics and Tsuchibayashi's work with these games. Characters like Xavi, Ujimasa, Yoshihiro , Muneshige, Yoshimoto, etc. - not your cookiecutter-prettyboy characters - may not be the most popular faces but you bet they add more variety, content and meaning to these games. Too bad that, at least to me it seems, Capcom doesn't see things like that.
(Gimme axe plox gonna chop my fingers off before I come up with anything else to add. Yukimuraaaa, come baaack~ DDD':)
